THE HAPPY Junior High Bovs won
the La/buddie Basketball Tournament
b\ defeating the host team 50 to 48.
Happ> was behind seven points both
in the third quarter and again in the
fourth quarter. The score went into the
closing minute tied 48 all. Cory Me-
Carles was fouled with only six sec-
onds left in the game. He stepped to
the free throw line and sank both
attempts, giving Happy the victory
and First Place Trophy. Dax Mitchell
scored 4 points in the championship
game. These were Dax first scoring of
the season.
Jesse Sosa scored 22 points in the
first game of the Tourney against
Walcott. Happv beat Walcott 52 to 20.
Jesse Sosa was named the Most
Valuable Player of the Tournament.
Congratulations. Jesse!
Ihe boys making that trip to Laz-
buddic were Cory McC'arley, Jesse
Sosa. Marty Middleton. Dax Mitchell,
Y'aney Dempsey. Guy Coille. T. J. Seal
and Jim Tirey. Coach Mike Louis said
he was pleased with his team’s play.
JUNIOR HIGH Girls won second in
the La/buddie Tournament. They lost
to the home team by one shot scored
in the last second of an overtime
period. Coach Clay Stout reported on
the girls plav.
HAPPY COWGIRLS and Happy
Cowboys won both their games in
District play last week.
La/buddie came to Happy on Tues-
dav evening. Cowgirls won but the
lead changed five times during the
game. Shana Bradshaw scored 16
points; Jacinda Stockett, 14; Carrie
Sanders. 4; Sheri Bassett, b; Shelley
Watson. 2 and Jobeth Thompson. 1.
Cowgirls defeated Kress on Friday
evening on Kress’ own court. The
score was 5~ to 45. Carrie Sanders was
high point for the evening with 17;
Jacinda Stockett was close behind with
14; Shana Bradshaw. 13; Sheri Bas-

62 to 35 on our home court. Jody
Johnson led the Happy scorers with 14
points; Dwayne Simons, 13; Codv
Weavers, 12; Leo Fernandez, 10; Clin-
ton Clark. 8: Justin Clark. 2; Jimmy
Moore, 2; and Mace Middleton. 1.
Everyone got some action.
Cowboys defeated Kress 51 to 36 at
Kress on Friday evening. Cody Wea-
vers was high point with 22. Clinton
Clark was next with 11. Jody Johnson
scored 4; Mace Middleton. 4; Dwayne
Simons. 3; Justin Clark. 2. The Cow-
boys played good defense this game.
During the third period they scored 20
points while holding the Roos to just 7
points.
THE REGIONAL Band did perform
last weekend. Justin Clark and Trieia
Foster and Laurie Seal played in the
High School Concert. Kara Brown
participated in the Junior High compe-
tition. The band will be working on
contests now.
JIM BOB AND TANDY Sims are the
parents of a new son. James Robert
Sims II. born January 15th. Little Jim
Bob weighed in at seven pounds five
ounces and was twenty and one
fourth inches long. Mother and Baby
are both doing well. Happy grand-
mother is Ruth Sims (and one of the
best). Maternal grandparents are Dee
Evans and Charlie Walton.
MABEL SIMS called with the senior
Citizens news. She is ready for war-
mer weather, but I’m afraid she is
going to have to wait a while. Wish it
weren’t so. Mabel and 1 need to move
to a warmer climate. And we’ve both
lived here all our lives and probably
will continue to do so.
The weather did get cold, and
windy. We saw a few snow .flurries on
Saturday night, but you had to be out
to see them in the headlights. Must
have been about six or seven o’clock.
No trace of such later or early Sunday
morning.
Senior Citizens had a good number
at their luncheon last week. The
Baptist Ladies were the hostesses.
Mabel said it was good and they
enjoyed it.
Senior Citizens will have Pot Luck
Supper tonight, Thursday. January
24th. at 6 p.m. at the Happy Center.
They are still having work days on
Tuesdays. They meet about 10 a.m.
and have lunch at noon. The men
usually play dominoes every week day
about one o’clock.
COWBOY 4-H will show Ihelr Live-
stock at the Randall County Junior
Show this Friday in Canyon____or at the
WTSU Barn just north of Canyon.
TRAVIS JONES showed the Grand
Champion Gilt in Swisher County
Junior Livestock Show last week.
DWAYNE SIMONS won Grand
Champion steer with his big black
steer.
ROXIE JOHNSON, Happy FFA
Sweetheart, helped present the trophy-
ribbons.
JAY W ADE JOHNSON showed the
reserve Grand Champion Steer, a
heavy weight cross.
BILLY PARKER won a first in the
Heavy Finewool Cross Lamb class. He
also went on to win Reserve Breed
Champion.
SHAWNA HARVEY won a fifth
place with a light Hanip Iamb. J. J.
Harvey won a fourth and Chandy
Harvey won a 7th in the heavy Hamp
lambs.
DEE ANN McCarley won fifth with
a heavy weight Suffolk. Billy Parker
won a tenth in that same class and
leah Hobbs won 16th.
ROXIE JOHNSON placed in the
Angus-Shorthorn class with an Angus
steer.
CODY WEAVERS won Duroe Breed
Champion. Monte Foster placed third
with a light weight Hampshire.
IN THE Light Weight Other Pure
Breeds. Monte Foster placed fourth:
Brandon Clark. 6th; and Lloyd Rahlfs,
7th; and Eric Wallace. 8th.
STUDENT OF THE WEEK: Happy
Sixth grade art student of the week for
January 21-24 is Peggy Hartman. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Hartman. She was chosen for her
artistic interest by her art teacher, Lou
Stephens. Peggy’s favorite subjects
are math, and art. Her hobbies are
playing basketball, sewing, and cook-
ing. Activities she enjoys doing for fun
in her spare time are playing the flute
and riding horses. Peggy attends the
Catholic Church with her family.
D’ANN. a fourth grader at Happy has
been chosen Health student of the
week January 21-24. D’Ann is the
granddaughter of Ruth Sims. Her
favorite subject is Science. For hobbies
she stated she enjoys collecting mar-
bles. In her spare time she enjoys
playing soccer and baseball. She at-
tends the First Baptist Church of
Happy with her grandmother.
STUDENT OF THE WEEK: Brandon,
a fifth grader at Happy has been
selected as the Reading student of the
week. January 21-24. He is the son of
Rickie and Judy Clark. Brandon's
favorite subject is Math. He also
enjoys all types of sports, football,
basketball, tennis, and swimming.
Brandon attends the Methodist Church
with his family. To be selected as
student of the week, the student must
be passing, have all assigned work in
on due date. The student also must
have a pleasant personality.

"A Creative Art I Enjoy.” Mrs.
Hobart McManigal gave the Federa-
tion Report.
Mrs. Cone Johnson, Fine Arts Chai-
rman. introduced the guest speaker.
Mrs. Dwane Love, of the G.F.W.C.
Progressive Study Club of Tulia. Mrs.
Love showed her collection of dolls,
past and present, of the Madame
Alexander line.
Cheese and crackers and coconut
cake with coffee and tea were served

SCHOLARSHIP — The Texas lech Ex-Students Association annually
provides scholarships to high school valedictorians and salutatorians who
enroll as freshman students at Texas Tech. Vicki Todd, valedictorian from
Happy High School, receives her check from Dr. Bill Dean, executive direc-
tor of the Ex-Students Association. Vicki is majoring in advertising at Tech.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Todd of Happy.
