RAIN IS the big news. Reports
ranged f rom 1 inch to 1.9. Water stand-
ing everywhere, running down the bar-
row ditch, a beautiful sight.
HAPPY WILL be represented in
five track events at the Regional meet.
Dax Mitchell won the 800 meter run
with a time of 2:01.83 and the 1600
meter run with 4:38.50. Jesse Sosa won
the 110 hurdles in a time of 15.0 and 2nd
in the 300 hurdles in 41.94. Yancey
Dempsey won second in discus with a
distance of 123-8. Happy Cowboys
came in 4th with 60 points.
J. J. Harvey 2nd in the 800 with a ume
of 2:42.68. Peggy Hartman won 2nd in
High Jump with 4-8. Cowgirls tied for
5lh with 36 points.
Marty Middleton represents Happy
in Regional Play in Tennis.
HAPPY'S CROP Judging team
also won District. First place team is all
freshmen: Darren Bryan, Jason Hob-
good, Richard Navarrctte and Marc
Bonds. This same team placed 6th in the
Tech contest, but they won 1st place in
district. Their instructor is Gaylon Fry.
HAPPY KLKMKNTARY won 1st
place in UIL competition in Music
Memory. Both 5th grade and 6th grade
teams won First place. Thai fifth grade
team is Brandon Vick, Kim Mayes and
Jeff Blanks. The sixth grade team is Lori
Moudy, Todd McCarlcy and Eric
Smith.
Kcri Bryan won 1st in Filth grade
Ready Writing. Mendy Dempsey won
2nd in 4th grade ready writing. Julie
Lca\ut won 3rd in Sixth grade Ready
Writing.
Nicholas Hughes won 2nd in Number
Sense.
Jeana Stockett Miss
Happy
Jeana Stockett is the 1988 Miss
Happy. She was crowned and presented
red roses by Roxic Johnson the retiring
queen. Jeana is the daughter of James
and Betty Stockett. First Runner-up is
Christy McMamgal, daughter of Jim
and Willa Jane McManigal. Second
Runner-up is Melissa Walker, grand-
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Me Broom.
Other contestants included M'Shaun
Burks,Laura Tircy, Angela Schulte,and
Shcree Elliott.
Junior Miss Happy is Julie Leavitt,
daughter of Kathy Cumby. Julie was
crowned by the retiring Junior Miss,
Jana McManigal. First runner-up is Joli
Pearson, daughter of Bill and Terri
Pearson. Christine Casillas, daughter of
Connie Casillas, is second runner-up.
Other contestants included Mindy
Dempsey, Jennifer Tirey, Cindy Jones,
Amber Irlbeck, Cheryl Strohmeyer,
Mistce Garrett and Mary Elliott.
Little Miss Happy is Dana Banister,
daughter of Dcbora Banister. Jaci Leav-
itt. retiring Little Miss Happy, crowned

Dana and presented her red roses. Con-
stance Gillenwatcr is first runner-up.
Katy Jo Scroggins, daughter of Kent and
Terry Scroggins, is the second runner-
up. Other contestants were Jill Stout,
Amanda Williams Jennie Gillenwatcr,
Jessica Cruz, Laci Davis, Jamie Vick,
Alyssa Irlbeck and Amy Lawson.
Lee Wilcox presided as Master of
Ceremonies amid a background of stars,
tinsel and glittering lights. The theme of
the Miss Happy pageant was "Putting on
the Ritz.” Seniors of "88-'89 decorated
the auditorium stage for the Sunday
afternoon contests.
Chairmen for the occasion were Terri
Pearson and Kathy Cumby. Selinda
Cumby helped with the talent to enter-
tain during judging.
Jim Tirey, son of George and Sara
Tircy, provided the music for the intro-
ductions of all the candidates. A special
thanks to Jim for his time and talents.
Talent displayed during the Miss
Happy contests included songs by
Melanie Gruhlkey, Selinda Cumby,
Troy Lemmons and a violin solo by
Chavonne Smith.
THE: HAPPY DAYS Association
will hold its first meeting on Tuesday,
April 26lh, at 8:00 p.m. in the Jaycec
Hall. Officers will be elected. Please
attend.
THE: WAYSIDE: Community fed
over sixty people last Thursday evening,
in the Community Center in Wayside.
This was in appreciation to all the fire
fighters of the area. Wayside Emer-
gency Team had their regular ECA
Class following the supper.
TOM AND FRANCES Ferris at-
tended the Texas Western College reun-
ion at Snyder last weekend. Frances is a
former head of the Science Department
of Texas Western College. They visited
with many old friends there, one of
whom is Deane Frances Mills who
writes a weekly column in the Snyder
Daily News.
NATHAN AND Jo Fallen Harvey
have a new great grandchild. Barrett
Jake was bom February 26th to Melissa
and Marty Gaundcr of Pcrryton. He
weighed 7 pounds and measured 20
inches long. Peggy and Jerry Harvey are
the grandparents. Barrett Jake also has a
brother, Dustin.
CINDY STEWART, Lynda Flow-
ers and Shelley Watson took five girls to
Lubbock recently to a Missionary con-
ference.
A YOUTH group from the E'irst
Baptist Church went to the Activity
Center on Saturday evening where they
played racket ball, and bowled. After-
wards, they ate pizza. Dana and Lonnie
Phillips sponsored this group.
MARGARET MIDDLETON
wishes to convey this message, "Thanks
to everyone for your prayers, concern,
calls and cards dunng my recent illness.
Your thoughtfulness helps speed one's
recovery. Ours is a loving, caring com-
munity."
JAY SIMS has been selected to the
Congressional Young Leadership
Council. He will travel to Washington,
D.C. for a week of tours and meeting
congressmen.
GE:NE AND Judy Shipman trav-
eled to Dallas and the area last weekend
to deliver steers and visit Raphe.
REE:D McDonald and Bob
McDonald went fishing in Black Lake,
Louisiana. And they brought back the
big fish.. .not just a story. They had good
luck all week and brought home a 5 1/2
pound bass. Paul and Geraldine
McDonald of Amanllo joined them in
Black Lake.
JETTIE RATJEN has been in
Swisher Memorial Hospital this past
week. She is now recovering at home.
ABOUT 55 atended the Rainbow
Anniversary Tea in the home of Jerry
Holland on Sunday, April 10th. Rain-
bow Girls are celebrating 40 years of
Happy Rainbow. They also honored
Roxie Johnson, Jr. Member of the Grand
Music Committee, Grand Assembly of
Texas, International Order of the Rain-
bow for Girls.
SCHOOL BOARD elections next
month have three candidates running for
three places on the school board. These
are incumbents Jim McManigal and
Larry Stevens and a new member, Eddie
Bryan.
MARY SUE Eakes is again a candi-
date for Mayor of Happy. Running for
two seats on the city commission arc
incumbent, George Tirey, and Reed
McDonald and Michael Schoencn-
berger.
THE HAPPY Extension Home-
makers met Tuesday, April 12th, in the
home of Cindy Stewart. Marta Irlbeck
served refreshments.

Roll call was answered with "Do You

Sims presented the council report. Plans
were made to attend the District Meet-
ing in Levelland.
Nancy Cruse was voted Junior Club
Member. Sharlene Kimbrell was voted
Rookie of the Year and nominated for
the position of TEHA Chairman of
Swisher County.
The club backed the nomination of
Joan Frost to Director of District II.
Fruit Kabobs, apple wedges and an
orange ring were served to Nancy
Cruse, Debbie Bell, Joan Frost, Karen
Hargrave, Melody Huffman, Sharlene
Kimbrell, Dalenc Sims, Donna Smith,
Cindy Stewart, Marta Irlbeck, Patti
Quillin, Lynn Pearson, Vicki Stout and
Pam Landis.
The Happy Extension Homemakers
who attended the District Meeting in
Levelland on April 14th were Joan
Frost, Mary Womack, Lynn Pearson,
Dalene Sims, Debbie Bell, Karen Har-
grave, Sharlene Kimbrell and Vicki
Stout.
Joan Frost was elected District Direc-
tor of District II. Winners of the County
Cultural Arts contest who also won First
Place at district were Mary Womack,
Lynn Pearson and Debbie Bell. Mary
Womack won with her hand painted silk
scarves. Lynn Pearson won the Heritage
Skills with a Covered Photo Album.
Debbie Bell won the Photography with
her picture of snow in Tucson. We'll
have more about these winners next
week.
BELINDA GOODE was elected
District Director of District I Home
Extension Clubs. Belinda is a member
of the Sunnyhill Home Extension Club.
She was elected at the District I meeting
held at Boys Ranch on Tuesday, April
12th. Marilyn Payne has served as
TEHA Chairman in District I for two
years. Members attending the mcctin
from Sunnyhill Club were Belinda
Goode, Marilyn Payne, Phyllis Bryan
and myself.
The Sunnyhill Extension Club held
its regular meeting on Thursday, April
14th in the home of Phyllis Bryan.
Phyllis served fried apricot pics and fruit
with Apricot tea to Belinda Goode,
Marilyn Payne, Lou Dougherty and me.
Belinda Goode was elected to be the
nominee for a voting delegate of Ran-
daJl County to the State Convention in
Abilene in September. I presented the
program, "Women and Insurance."
The next meeting will be a joint
meeting with the Jowcll Extension Club
at the Ready Room of SPS in Canyon at
9:30 a.m. on May 12th. The program is
special diets. Please be my guests at that
meeting.
HAPPY HAS two businesses clos-
ing. Happy Lumber will finish selling its
stock at a Auction on April 30th. Sale
begins at 10 a.m. at the site of the Happy
Lumber and Supply on Highway 87.
Happy's Senior Citizens will furnish the
concession stand. Mark your calendar.
Happy Baskets is closing. Everything
in the store is 50% off. Happy Hair will
keep the greeting cards for Happy's con-
venience. Go by and talk to Nell.
NATIONAL RSVP Volunteer
Week is April 17th, thru the 23rd. The
Retired Senior Volunteer Program of
Swisher County is honoring all RSVP
volunteers during this week.
A luncheon is being held at 12 noon
on Thursday, April 21st, in the Happy
Senior Citizens Center. This is a cov-
ered dish luncheon honoring all RSVP
Volunteers and that includes the Meals-
on-Whccls volunteers.
This week is set aside each year to
spotlight the volunteer and their volun-
teer stations for their vital and signifi-
cant service.
THURSDAY EVENING, April
21st, at 7:30 in the Happy gym the
"Battle of the Sexes" will take place.
This is a basketball game, men vs.
women, (but attire can be deceiving),
with the old half-court rules. Players
will be the faculty, band parents, and
friends. Rumors have it that Vicki Stout
and Cindy Gales will referee. Sharon
McCarley will be one coach. Hopefully,
they will also have another one.
Admission is only 50 cents and pre-
school children are admitted free. For 50
cents you get to see the Parade of
Queens before the game. One will be
crowned at half-time (if not several
times during the game, too). The winner
will be selected by vote, a penny per
vote. There will be jars, labeled for the
individual in the foyer. Be sure to vote
for the "queen of your choice."
Cheerleaders will be Jay Sims, Jason
Hobgood, Yancey Dempsey, Guy
Coile, Shawn Gales, Monte Foster and
T. J. Seal, (among others).
Homemade pie and ice cream will be
served at the concession stand. A video
of the game may be purchased for $6.00.
Place your order at the game. All this,
sponsored by the Happy Band. Don’t
miss it.
PETE COLLINS will be in Happy
at the City Hall on Friday, April 29th,
from 1 to 5 p.m. to discuss problems and
answer questions about Happy Cable
T.V. System. Mr. Collins is with Uni-
versal Cable Communications from
Plainvillc, Kansas. Universal Cable
Communications owns the cable tv sys-
tem in Happy. This is your opportunity
as a cable tv subscriber and citizen of
Happy to come by and discuss any prob-
lems that you have with your cable.

THE ANNUAL Rabies Vaccina-
tion Clinic will be held Saturday, April
30th, 1988, in the Happy Fire Station
from 9 to 12 noon. The fee will be $8.00
per animal for city Dog License. Dr.
Wick Culp, D.V.M. from Amarillo (and
formerly of Happy) will hold this clinic,
which is sponsored by the Happy Fire
Department. All animals in the city
limits arc required to have an annual
rabies vaccination and a city dog li-
cense.
WAYNE WILCOX remains a pa-
tient in St. Anthony' Hospital. Imogene
Harris and Pete Crawford are two more
good friends in St. Anthony's.
JENNY FLOWERS is recuperat-
ing at her sister's home.
OUR SYMPATHY to Brother Bob
Miller, former pastor of Happy. His
father, Fred Miller, died last week.
CLYDE BUCHANAN, 56, died in
California. His obituary is included in
that section.
OUR SYMPATHY, too, to Nell
Sims, who lost her brother, J. C. Bell. J.
C. was buried in Hulver, near Estelline.
LONAS WRIGHT and Feme
Spear lost their sister, Faye Hargrove,
81, at Arcadia, California. Faye was
buried in Happy Cemetery.

April Is Cancer
Awareness Month
To help the fight against cancer the
members and friends of the Swisher
County Chapter of the American Cancer
Society will be contacting the residents
of Tulia and Swisher County the last
week of April. They will be asking for
help to make the cancer crusade a suc-
cess in Swisher County.
The Chapter wants to help people
become more aware of the progress in
cancer research; as well as to let every-
one know how the money lliat is given
during the crusade is spent The follow-
ing information was made available
from the Service and Rehabilitation for
Swisher County:

Total served last year, 11.
Total served this year, 12.
Estimated dollar value of all services,
$1,553.

Woman Of The Year
Nominee
West Texas State residence halls and
chartered student organizations have
nominated 17 women and 11 men for
WTSU Man and Woman of the Year
honors.
The nominees will be publicly recog-
nized at a 2 p.m. Sunday, April 24,
reception in the Northcn Hall Atrium.
Dr. Ed D. Roach, WTSU president, will
introduce the nominees and will an-
nounce the three finalists for Man of the
Year and Woman of the Year. The re-
ception is free and open to the public.
WTs Man and Woman of the Year
will be presented Thursday, April 28, at
the All-University Honors Banquet in
the East Dining Hall. Admission to the 7
p.m. banquet is $6 without and $4 with
a WT meal card.
Each residence hall and chartered
organization was asked to submit one
male and one female entry. Nominees
accepted for consideration were full-
time students with at least 60 hours and
a minimum overall grade point of 2.5.
The Man and Woman of the Year
awards, the most prestigious honors
bestowed by the university, arc spon-
sored by the Scribes Chapter of Mortar
Board Honor Society.
Happy's Melancy Gruhlkey, senior
elementary education major was nomi-
nated by the Texas Student Education
Association.

had some fly-in visitors from Dallas to
help celebrate his 70th birthday. His
wife's son-in-law, George and wife,
Sherry Gibson surprised Fayrenc and
