The Le Tpurneau freshmen Yel-
lowjackets halted the Panola
Ponies winning streak by clipping
the Ponies 66-60 last Friday night
in the Ponies’ first game on their
home court. The Ponies held the
lead only once in the contest and
that when Derry Dunn banked two
free throws to open the game.
The Yellow jackets dominated
the first half of play with the
Ponies fighting desperately to stay
in range. The constant scoring of
Stan Brigham and Paul Woods put
the ’Jackets in command. Leading
scorers for the Ponies in the first
half were James Sturrock and
Derry Dunn. The half-time score
ended with the Yellowjackets
ahead 33-21. The ’Jackets hit 64%,
while the Ponies could manage a
slim 17% from the field.
Fighting fiercely, the Ponies
made a strong comeback in the
last half to see the effort fall only
a few points shy of a victory.
Panola’s playmaker and sharp-
shooter Wally Cutrer begin sink-
ing fifteen and twenty foot jump
shots to bring the Ponies in close
range of their opponents. With T.
C. Williams, James Sturrock and
Chuck Beaty sweeping the back
board the Ponies cut the margin
to four points, but the ’Jackets put
a stall on the ball game to stop
the ball hawking Ponies.
The Ponies finally bowed out the
strong team of Le Tourneau by a
•36-60 margin.
Leading scorer for the Yellow-
jackets was Stan Brigham and
B. Harrris with 19 points, and Paul
Woods with 13 points, while the
Ponies were led by Wally Cutrer,
Daniel Newman, and T. C. Willi-
ams wih 14, 10, and 8 points re-
spectively. The Ponies shot 36%,
while the ’Jackets hit a hot 52%
of their shots.
