Turner Chapel Constructed As Memorial
Memories of another person often
motivate people to do something
special.
Mrs. Ruth Turner’s memory of her
son, Sid Baker Turner, kindled a
desire to establish a memorial to him.
The result is the Sid Baker Turner
Memorial Chapel here at the College.
When Mrs. Turner decided to do
something in honor of her son she
wanted something both practical and
beautiful. The final choice is both. The
chapel is soothing to both the soula nd
the eye.
Donated in 1977 and finished in 1978,
the chapel has been the site of many
weddings and special meetings.
Unfortunately the chapel has to be
kept locked due to its valuable
equipment.
No regular services are held, but
use of the chapel can be arranged
through John Boland’s office.

McDaniel Addresses Seniors
While you have the day off on
; Friday, April 22, more than 500 area
high school seniors will be on campus
for the annual Panola Junior College
Senior Day.
The college administration is in-
viting all seniors in the college’s
three-county service area to spend the
day touring the campus, talking with
staff members and learning about
career opportunities.
Dr. John Hoffman, dean of con-
tinuing educa tion is again in charge of
coordinating the day’s activities.
The day which Dr. Hoffman and his
committee members have designed
begins with a general assembly at
9:15 a.m.
At the assembly, students will be
welcomed by staff members and
students, including words from Dr.
Gary McDaniel, Panola Junior
College president.
The second session of the day will
be a career and education counseling
session. Students will be given the
chance to select from 16 education-,
career clusters.
The students will then attend
Career presentations prepared by
committees of Panola College
teachers.
Career sessions will be offered on
automobile mechanics; business;
coaching and physical education;
communications; cosmetology; data
processing or computer science;
educations and guidance and coun-
seling; engineering, math and
physics; forestry; law and politics
including pre-law, government,
history, social work; music and
drama; nursing, office occupations
including secretarial and general
office; science including biology,
chemistry, pre-med, pre-vet, pre-
pharmacy, and pre-physical therapy ;
oil and gas technology; and welding.
At the career cluster sessions,
students will receive information on
career possibilities and income
levels. Educational requirements will
be explained and emphasis will be
placed on what Panola has to offer the
student in these career fields.
After, the career sessions, the
students will be invited to lunch in the
new gym. After lunch, the seniors will
have free time to visit with ad-
ministrative offices and receive
details on how to become a student at
PJV.
Change in Registration
Procedures Announced
Next fall students will register on a
1 first-come, first-serve basis. Students
who are counseled first will be
allowed to register first.
I Students planning to return to
Panola next fall may begin the
registration process now.
Students should go to the coun-
selor’s office to be counseled as soon
as possible. Your counseling form will
be sta ped and a registration time
3 assigned to you. In this way, the
counseling form becomes a
registration permit showing the time
that the student will register next fall.
If a student is counseled now, he
will be among the first to register
during the registration period next
fall. Therefore, he can get the classes
at the time that he wants them.
If a student is not sure that he will
return in the fall, it will be to his
advantage to go ahead and be
counseled. He will guarantee his
place in the registration process if he
decides to return to Panola.
If a student waits to be counseled
during the summer, or just before
registration, then he will register
much later in the registration
process.
“Be counseled early. Register
early. That is the name of the game.
Do it now, while you are thinking
about it,” says Martha Miller, dean of
registra tion.
Houston Hosts Convention For SGA
The Student Government
Association recently attended a
convention in Houston held for the
different Texas Jr. colleges to hold
workshops to express their ideas on
the way the Student Government
Body should be run.
The P.J.C. students who attended
the workshops were President Elsie
Strong, Vice-President Mark Lyons,
Secretary Rosemary Mosley, Lucy
Rushmore, Patra Marsden, and
Walter Ward. Approximately 450
students were present from various
other junior colleges.
The P.J.C. students presented a
workshop on how to rebuild the
Student Government. The two-day
convention allowed students from the
different colleges to share their ideas
on how to run the Student Govern
ment. Director of Student Activities.
Edd Smith said, “I learned a lot about
how the Student Government is
supposed to work.”
He went on to say that the host
school, Houston Community College,
made the trip fun. They had planned
dances for the two nights their guest
stayed. Directed towards the students
who attended the convention, Smith
continued, “And if you didn’t have a
good time and learn something, it was
your own fault.”
