e it known that I, FiiK A. CARLSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
Wichita Falls, in the county of Wichita and
5 State of Texas, have invented a new and
Improved Strap - Fastener, of which the
following is a specification.
My invention relates to strap fasteners,
and more particularly to a clamping device
10 which is held either in the open or the
closed position, and the object is to provide
a useful fastener which is adapted for use
on various parts of harness, saddles,' reins,
and tie-straps, and which may take the place
15 of buckles. -
Another object is to produce a deviceI
which is simple in construction and opera-
tion and which is strong and durable, and
which may he manufactured at small cost.

Reference is had to the accompanying
25 drawings which form a part of this appli-
cation and specification._
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fas-
tener applied to a tie strap. Fig. 2. is a
vertical section of the fastener, showing the
30 position of the parts in the open position or
capacity. Fig. 3. is a 'vertical section of
the fastener, showing the position of the
parts in the closed capacity. . Fig. 4 is an
end view of the eccentric roller. Fig. 5 is
35 a front elevation of the fastener, showing
the position - of the parts in the open
capacity.

The fastener has a frame composed of a
bottom portion 1 having .bearing arms 2.
A roller 3 is eccentrically journaled within
said frame in said bearing arms on a ful-
45 crum pin or bolt 4 which holds the arms 2
in operative relation. The roller 3 has teeth
on the swell thereof for engaging a strap
or other device. A partition 6 divides the'
space between the roller 3 and the body por-
50 tion 1 so that the stay end of a strap may
be carried loosely between the body portion
1 and the partition and that the roller will'
be close enough to press on a strap and bind
the same against the partition. The parti-
55 tion 6 is thus a bearing partition. A springbar is 'mounted in the frame of the fastener
to bear on the periphery of the roller to
h6ld the roller either in the open or closed
capacity or position. This bar 7T has legs
8 which are passed down under the partition 60
6 and the ends of the legs 8 are clamped on
the partition 6, as shown. The partition 6
is made rigid with the bearing arms -2 by
projecting portions of the ends of the parti-
tion through the arms as shown in Fig.1 and 65
riveting the same to the arms.- The spring
bar 7 engages a shoulder 9 in the roller to
hold the fastener open, as shown in Fig. 2.
This provision can be appreciated only, by
' the person using the fastener. The person 70
does not have, to hold the fastener open
while adjusting the strap. The spring bar
7 bears on the periphery of the roller and
holds the same firmly on the strap when in
the closed position, as shown in Fig. 3. The 75.
spring bar has considerable leverage by
reason of the eccentric mounting of the
roller. The fastener is easily opened by
pulling the free end 10 of the strap up-
wardly or outwardly, as shown by dotted 80
outline in Fig. 1.. When the fastener is
closed the teeth 5 will engage the strap and
bind the same against the bearing partition
6. The bottom 1 and the partition 6 form
a carrier for the fixed or stay end of the 85
strap which extends to the right as com-.
pared with Figs. 1 and.2 or which may ex-
tend in either direction.
Having fully described - my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by 90
Letters Patent, is,--
A strap fastener- comprising a frame pro-
vided with a bearing partition, a toothed
roller eccentrically journaled in said frame
and adapted to clamp a strap on said parti- 95
tion, said roller having a shoulder. formed
in the periphery thereof, a spring' bar at-
tached to said partition and adapted to
bear on said roller to hold the same against
a strap lying on said partition when said 100
roller is in the closed position and to en-
gage said shoulder to hold said roller in
the open position.
