UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR KRAUSKOPF, OF FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS.
TUBE-CLAMP.1,027,423.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed November 22, 1911. Serial No. 661,807.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR KRAUSKOPF, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
Fredericksburg, in the county of Gillespie
5 and State of Texas, have invented certain
new and useful Improvements in Tube-
Clamps; and I do hereby declare-the follow-
ing to be a full, clear, and exact description
of the invention, such as will enable others
10 skilled in the art to which it appertains to
make and use the same.
This invention relates to tube clamps for
raising and lowering pipe sections in wells;
and it consists in the novel construction and
15 combination of the parts hereinafter fully
described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view
of a pipe section provided with a tube clamp
according to this invention, and showing
20 the clamp in position to raise the pipe sec-
tion. Fig. 2 is a side view of the clamp
with its members slid out of engagement
with the pipe and with each other. Fig. 3
is a side view of the clamp shown in Fig. 2,
25 but turned one-quarter around. Fig. 4 is a
detail side view of a modification of the
upper clamp member. Fig. 5 is an end
view of the same.
The pipe section or tube 2 is provided
30 with a screwthreaded coupling-sleeve 3 at
its upper end in the usual way.
The lower clamp member is formed of a
channel-shaped plate 4 of sheet metal which
bears against one side of the pipe, and
35 which has side portions 5 which project
across the pipe. The upper parts of the
side portions 5 have V-shaped notches 6 cut
in them, and forming upwardly projecting
inclined planes 7. The plate 4 has at its
40 upper end an offset tongue 8 which termi-
nates in an eye 9. This tongue 8 is offset
to clear the coupling-sleeve 3, and a cord
10 or any other approved hoisting device is
connected to the eye 9.
45 The upper clamp member is formed of a
channel-shaped plate 12 of sheet metal
which bears against the other side of the
pipe 2 from the plate 4. The plate 12 has
side portions 13 which project across the.pipe. These side portions have V-shaped 50
notches 14 which form downwardly project-.
ing inclined planes 15. A cord 16 or other
lifting device is attached to the back of the
plate 12. The top of the plate 12 is ar-
ranged to bear against the underside of the 55
coupling-sleeve 3, and the inclined planes
15 are arranged in engagement with the
inclined planes 7.
When the pipe is raised by the cord 10
the inclined planes draw the plates 4 and 60
12 toward each other and thereby clamp the
pipe between them. When the pipe has
been lowered into the well, the lower clamp
member is let down to the position shown
in Fig. 2, so that the clamp members are 65
disengaged from each other and from the
pipe, and can be drawn up.
In the modification shown in Figs. 4 and
5, the- upper clamp member has laterally
projecting pins 20 instead of inclined planes 70
or projections. The inclined planes of the
lower clamp member engage with the pro-
jections 20 so that the pipe. is clamped in a
similar manner to that hereinbefore de-
scribed. 75
These clamp members are made of differ-
ent sizes to suit different diameters of pipe,
but as packing pieces can be inserted between
the clamp members and the pipes it is not
necessary to have a separate clamp for each 80
size of pipe.
What I claim is:
1. A tube clamp, comprising a lower
clamp member formed of a channel-shaped
plate having upwardly projecting inclined 85
planes at its sides, an upper clamp member
formed. of a channel-shaped plate having
projections which engage with the said in-
clined planes, and means for raising and
lowering the said clamp members. 90
2. A tube clamp, comprising a lower
clamp member formed of a channel-shaped
plate having upwardly projecting inclined
planes at its sides, said plate having also
an offset tongue which extends upwardly 95
from the middle part of its top edge, an
upper clamp member formed of a channel-
shaped plate having projections which en-
