UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. ZANT, OF ASPERMONT, TEXAS.
SULKY-PLOW.No. 805,333.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 15, 1905. Serial No. 265,358.To all whomit i iay concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. ZANT, a citizens
of the United States, residing at Aspermont,i
in the county of Stonewall and State of Texas,
have invented certain new and useful Improve-
ments in Sulky-Plows; and I do declare the
following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-i
tion of the invention, such as will enable others
skilled in the art to which it appertains to make
and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in
disk sulky -plows, and more particularly toI
means for mounting and adjusting the follower
or rear furrow wheel.
The object of the invention is to'provide a
simple, durable, and highly efficient means
for angularly adjusting the rear caster or fol
lower wheel, which runs in the newly-made
furrow, so as to prevent the same from leav-
ing the furrow and to cause the plow to cut
uniformly in both hard and soft land.
With the above and other objects in view
the invention.consistsof certain novel features
of construction, combination, and arrangement
of parts, as will be hereinafter described and
claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is
a side elevation of a well-known form of
sulky-plow with my improvements applied
thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the
same. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation, and Fig.
4 is a detail vertical sectional view showing
the adjusting-levers for the furrow-wheels.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1
denotes a well - known form of disk sulky-
plow, which comprises a beam 2, a carrying-
frame 3, and a plow-disk 4. The frame is
mounted upon the usual land-wheel 5 and the
furrow-wheel 6, which latter is vertically ad-
justable by means of a hand-lever 7 and an-
gularly adjustable by means of a hand-lever
8. The lever 8 is pivoted by a pin 9 upon
one side of a double segmental rack 10, which
is mounted upon a frame 18, secured to the
rear portion of the beam. Said frame has a
rearwardly-extending arm 118, the rear end
of which is bifurcated, as at 19. The rear
follower-wheel 15 is journaled on a spindle 16
at the lower end of a vertically-disposed shaft
17, which is journaled in bearings in the bi-
furcated portions 19 of arm 118, and on the
said shaft is adjustably secured a collar 20,
which lies between the parts 19 and holds the
said shaft against vertical movement. The
lever 8 has a locking-dog 11 to coact with the
rack 10 and is connected by a link 12 to aPatented Nov. 21, 1905.
crank-arm 13.upon the vertical portion 14 of
the axle or spindle of the wheel 6. Secured
upon the upper end of the shaft 17 is a crank-
arm 21, which is adapted to be connected by 6o
a link 22 to the lower end of an operating-le-
ver 23. The latter is pivoted by the pin 9
upon the side of the segmental rack 10 oppo-
site to that upon which the lever 8 is pivoted,
as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the draw- 65
ings. This lever carries a locking-dog 24 to
coact with the rack 10 to hold said lever, and
hence the shaft 17 and its wheel 15, in an ad-
justed position.
It will be seen that when the lever 23 is 70
moved forwardly or rearwardly the angular
disposition of the wheel 15 will be changed to
cause the plow to cut more or less, as de-
sired. Without this adjustment of the wheel
15 the plow will cut more in hard land and 75
less in soft land, and very frequently this
wheel is thrown entirely out of the furrow,
whereupon the plow fails to cut at all. By
adjusting this rear wheel the same will be
caused to remain in the furrow and the plow 8o
can be made to cut uniformly in all kinds of
earth.
From the foregoing description, taken in
connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction and operation of the inven- 85
tion will be readily understood without re-
quiring a more extended explanation.
Having thus described my invention, what
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
Patent, is- 9o
1. A sulky-plow, having a beam, a front
frame and a rear frame, land and furrow
wheels on opposite sides of the front frame,
a vertical shaft mounted in the front frame for
angular movement, and having a spindle for 95
the furrow-wheel and also provided with a
crank, a disk carried by the beam, a follower-
wheel in rear of the disk, a vertical shaft
mounted in the rear frame for angular move-
ment and having a spindle for the follower- ioo
wheel, and also provided with a crank, a seg-
ment-rack on the rear frame, levers on oppo-
site sides of said segment-rack, each having a
dog to engage the rack, and links connecting
the respective levers to the respective cranks i05
of the furrow and follower wheel vertical
-shafts.
2. A sulky-plow having a beam, a front
frame and a rear frame, each attached to the
beam, said rear frame having a rearwardly- iio
extending arm and an upwardly -extending
segment-rack, land and furrow wheels on op-25
