UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WILLIAM STATON, OF ROCKWOOD, TEXAS.
PORTABLE WATER-HEATER AND STEAM-COOKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,358, dated April 12, 1904.
Application filed January 8, 1902. Serial No, 88,845, (No model,)To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM STATON,
.a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock-
wood, in the county of Coleman and State of
5 Texas, have invented a new and useful Port-
able Water-Heater and Steam-Cooker; and I do
hereby declare the following to be a full,.clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as
will enable others skilled in the art to which
10 it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a portable water-
heater and steam-cooker, and has for its ob-
ject to provide an apparatus of this class which
will be adapted for heating water for a va-
'5 riety of domestic purposes, such as for wash-
ing clothes and the like, and for supplying
steam for scalding clothes, for cooking feed
for stock, and for operating a churn or simi-
lar device.
20 Another object of the invention is to pro-
vide an apparatus which may be supplied with
heat from an ordinary stove or furnace or
from a chimney or from any other form of
heater, such as gas or oil burner, and which
25 may be readily uncoupled and compactly
stored away when not in use.
Furthermore, the invention has for its ob-
ject to provide an apparatus which will be
especially adapted for washing clothes and
30 which will be capable of supplying water or
steam to different receptacles at different tem-
peratures for scalding, washing, and rinsing
clothes.
The invention consists in the novel construc-
35 tion and combination of parts hereinafter illus-
trated and described, and particularly pointed
out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of
reference designate corresponding parts, Fig-
40 ure 1 is a plan view of a portable water-heater
and steam cooker and generator constructed
in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is
a detailed view illustrating the manner of con-
necting the pipes with the coil.
45 Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a
steam-generating coil consisting of an approxi-
mately U-shaped base portion 2 and upper
arms 3 and 4, which are connected with the
sides or legs of the base portion by short
50 bends; but the coil may be constructed in anyother desired manner, as will be readily un-
derstood. The coil is designed to be heated
for converting the small volume of water
within it into steam by means of any suitable
heating apparatus and isadapted to be placed 55
within a stove or furnace or within a chim-
ney where the heat is sufficient for the pur-
pose, and the arms 3 and 4 are provided at
the outer terminals with tapering or conical
extensions 5 and 6, adapted to be introduced 6o
into the adjacent ends of tubes or, pipes 7
and 8, whereby the latter are detachably con-
nected to the steam - generating coil. The
pipes 7 and 8 are provided with conical end por-
tions which detachably receive the conical ex- 65
tensions of the arms of the coil. Pipe 7 is flexi-
ble and extends from the arm 3 of the steam-
generating coil to a water receptacle or reser-
voir 6, which may consist of a tank, trough,
or any other.suitable receptacle; but the ap- 70
paratus may be connected with any other suit-
able source of supply, such as a hydrant, wa-
ter-supply pipe, or the like. The reservoir
or receptacle is provided with a pipe or noz-
zle 10, having arms or branches 11 and 12, and 75
the said pipe 7 is suitably coupled to a branch
or arm 11, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of
the drawings, and it is provided between its
ends with a suitable cock or valve 13 for con-
trolling the flow of water to the steam-gener- 8o
ating coil.
The pipe 8 is adapted to convey the steam
from the coil to a distributer 14, consisting of
a main distributing-pipe and a series of dis-
tributing-pipes 15, 16, and 17, each provided 85
with a cut-off or valve 18. The main distrib-
uting-pipe is provided with a centrally-ar-
ranged short pipe 19, which is connected by
a coupling 20 with the adjacent end of the
steam-pipe 8 and with one end of a water-pipe 90
21, extending from the said coupling to the
arm or branch 12 of the pipe or nozzle 10 of
the reservoir or receptacle. The pipe or noz-
zle 10,.which is approximately Y-shaped, may
be secured to the receptacle in any suitable 95
manner, and it may also be provided with
means for connecting it with a hydrant or
other source of supply. The water-pipe 21 is
provided adjacent to coupling 20 or at any
other desired point with a valve or cut-off 22, 100No. 75 7,368.
