TILDEN J. BYLER, OF BLANCO, TEXAS.
LOADING AND DUMPING DEVICE.Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 2, 1911.
Application filed Tanuary 21, 1911. Serial No. 603,965.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILDEN J. BYLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
Blanco, in the county of Blanco and State
5 of Texas, have invented a new and useful
Loading and Dumping Device; and I do
hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art
10 to which it appertains to make and use the
same.
This invention relates to the art of exca-
vating and hoisting, and road grading
mechanism, and it more particularly per-
15 tains to a new and useful device for loading
gravel and similar materials upon wagons.
The main object of the invention is to
utilize the same in connection with the ordi-
nary scrapers and teams, that is, the device
20 or loading apparatus is to be situated at
the place where the gravel or similar mate-
rial is to be obtained, after which the gravel
or other material is scraped upon the tray,
by the ordinary scrapers being driven over
25 the tray, thus loading the same. The tray
is then hoisted to the desired height, and
subsequently the wagon, which hauls the
gravel to the road bed or any other location,
is driven under the tray, after which the
30 hinged two-part bottom is released, thus al-
lowing the gravel or other material to be
dumped into the wagon. After the two part
bottom of the tray is released the same is
again closed and the tray lowered, and the
35 operations above set forth again repeated.
The device, as herein described and
shown in the drawings, may not only be used
for loading gravel and the like, but may be
employed in excavating, or upon farms,
40 whereby fertilizer and other material may
be loaded in wagons. In the drawings,
however, there is only disclosed one particu-
lar form of the invention, but in practical
fields this form may require alterations, to
45 which the applicant is entitled, provided the
alterations are comprehended by the ap-
pended claims.
The invention comprises further features
and combinations of parts hereinafter set
50 forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:-Figure 1 is a side ele-
vation of the hoisting and loading appara-
tus, constructed in compliance with the in-
vention, showing the hoisting and loadingtray in its lowermost position. Fig. 2 is a 55
view similar to Fig. 1, showing the loading
tray in its uppermost position, and illus-
trating a wagon in dotted lines beneath the
tray, whereby the contents of the tray may
be dropped into the wagon. Fig. 3 is a view 60
in end elevation, further disclosing the fea-
tures of the invention. Fig. 4 is a top plan
view of the apparatus. Fig. 5 is a view
in side elevation of one side of the.hoisting
tray. Fig. 6 is a section view on line 6-6 65
of Fig. 5.
Referring to the annexed drawings, 1
designates a rectangular frame work, which
converges slightly toward the upper por-
tion and is suitably braced by the trans- 70
verse and angularly arranged braces 2 and
3. The braces are secured firmly in posi-
tion by means of the various bolts 4. The
corner beams of the frame work may be
provided at their lower ends with rollers, 75
wheels or the like 5, whereby the frame may
be movable from place to place. However,
only two of the corner beams may be pro-
vided with wheels, while the other two
beams may be connected in any suitable 80
manner to the rear of a wagon, thus making
it possible to move the apparatus from one
place to another.
Extending transversely of the upper por-
tion of the frame is a shaft 7, upon which 85
drums 8, 9 and 10 are mounted so as to
rotate with the shaft, there being two out-
side drums and one intermediate drum.
Connected to and partly wound around the
drums 8 and 10 are the cables 11, which pass 90
over the pulleys 12, which are secured to
the upper transverse braces of the frame
work. The lower ends of the cables 11 are
connected to the side flanges 13 of the tray
14, as illustrated in the drawings. Con- 95
nected to and considerably wound about the
drum 9 is the cable 15, by which the shaft at
the top of the frame work may be rotated.
It will be observed that the said cables are
arranged in such wise, as to permit the tray 100
14 to be hoisted, by imparting a pulling ac-
tion upon the cable 15, which will unwind
the cable 15 from the drum 9, and in turn
will wind the cables 11 upon the drums 8
and 10. The said shaft at one end is pro- 105
vided with a ratchet wheel 16. Pivoted to
one of the upper braces is a spring ten-
sioned pawl 17, which is designed to cop-990,955.
