the contents of the receptacle, the sections
are overlapped to form a cross (Fig. 4) and
provided with notches or slots 24 at their
opposite extremities.
5 The numeral 25 designates a fan shaft jour-
naled in the frame 1 as indicated at 26 and a
fan wheel 27 carried by said shaft is rotated
by a belt 28 operating over pulleys 29 and 30
carried by the shaft 25 and driving shaft 8 re-
10 spectively. The fan is designed to regulate
the temperature of the contents within the
receptacle 23 and is operated in connection
with the power mechanism continuously or
at intervals, its u e being determined by the
15 conditions under which the churning opera-
tion is conducted and controlled by the ma-
nipulation of the belt 28 operating over the
pulleys 29 and 30. A fan casing 31 secured
to the frame 1 and surrounding said fan
20 wheel is provided with a flared mouth por-
tion 32 positioned in such manner as to direct
the force of the fan wheel when operated
against the side of the receptacle and secure
the desired effect upon the churning material I
25 as may be expedient to secure the best results
in cooperation with the reciprocatory churn-
ing operation of the power mechanism. Op-
positely arranged vertical supports or stand-
ards 33 mortised in the upper frame section
30 1a and adjustably secured therein by set
screws 34, are located on said frame interme-
diate of the drive wheel 7 and pulley 10, and
an idler 35 journaled in said supports is de-
signed to regulate the tension of the belt 11
35 upon proper manipulation of said supports to
move the idler into or out of an operative po-
sition.
With the arrangement of the several parts
as shown, the operation is as follows :--The
40 driving shaft 3 is operated by the handle 6 or
from any source of power transmitted to the
pulley 5 by a belt (not shown), and when so
operated the crank shaft 8 having a belt con-
nection with the drive wheel 7 is caused to re-
45 volve and the reciprocating cross head 15
carrying the dasher rod and dasher is given
the necessary reciprocatory movement to agi-
tate and churn the contents of the receptacle
to the desired consistency. The fan wheel 125 also having a belt connection with the 5d
driving shaft is simultaneously operated with
the power mechanism when it is desired to
temper the contents of the receptacle 23, and
as before stated, the fan is designed to over-
come certain atmospheric or other tempera- 55
mental conditions detrimental to the speedy
coagulation of the material under operation.
The simplicity of construction of the coop-
erating sections and the practical neiit of
the power mechanism will be manifest, and 60
as will be understood a plurality of churns
may be operated by increasing the frame di-
mensions to accommodate a series of recipro-
cating cross heads operated from a crank
shaft common to all, and properly spaced to 65
permit the receptacles to be introduced and
withdrawn from the frame.
Having thus described the invention, what
is claimed as new is:
A churn of the character described, com- 70
prising a churn receptacle and frame, a driv-
ing shaft journaled in the frame, a belt wheel
mounted thereon, a crank pulley journaled in
said frame and driven by a belt from the
driving shaft, vertical guides secured to said 75
frame in line with said crank shaft, oppo-
sitely arranged guide rods carried by said
guides, a reciprocating cross head operating
between said guides and guided in its recipro-
catory movement by said guide rods, an op- so
rating pitman connected to said crank shaft
and cross head, a reciprocating dasher rod
connected to said cross head and deriving its
motion therefrom said dasher rod having a
lasherr secured to one extremity for agitating 85
the contents of said receptacle, and a fan
journaled in said frame and having a belt
connection with said driving shaft independ-
ent of the connection to the crank shaft and
adapted to temper the contents of said recep- 90
tacle during the churning operation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature
in presence of two witnesses.
