PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. GARNER, OF GALVESTON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO LYTLE J.
HUNTER, OF COVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
STATION-iNDIOATO-R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,976, dated November 16,1897.
Application iled November 11, 1896, Serial No. 611,698. (No model,)To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. GARNER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of
the city of Galveston, in the county of Gal-
5 veston and State of Texas, have invented cer-
tain new and useful Improvements in Auto-
matic Station-Indicators, of which the fol low-
ing is a specification.
The several features of my invention and'
1o the various advantages resulting from their
use conjointly or otherwise will be apparent
from the following description and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, making
part of this specification, pnd in which similar
r5 letters of reference indicate corresponding
parts, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a ma-
chine illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a
rear view of the said invention when the
back of the chamber has been removed. Fig.
20 3 is an end elevation, enlarged, of that end
of the chamber which is at the right hand in
Fig. 2, and showing both of the sprocket-
wheels in engagement with the sprocket in-
dicator-chain. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse
a5 section of the device, taken in the plane of
the dotted line 4 4 of Figs. 1 and 2, that face
of the section being shown which faces to-
ward the right in Fig, 2 and toward the left
in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of
30 the sprocket-wi eel, ratchet-wheel, and pawl,
located at the right-hand end of the box or
chamber in Fig. 2.
A indicates the box or chamber, having the
roof B, front side B2, rear side B3, and bottom
35 B4 and provided with ends C C. The front
of the chamber is open, except as closed by
the movable curtain or display-strip D. This
display-strip fills the entire front or substan-
tially the entire front of the chamber and
40 moves in connection with the following roll-
ers. E is a large positive roller journaled in
the lower rear part of the chamber and having
the shaft Ef, by which it is actuated, project-
ing through the adjacent side C of the cham-
45 ber and fixed to a ratchet-wheel F and to a
sprocket-wheel G. The ratchet-wheel is pro-
vided with a pawl F2, pivoted at F3 to the
end of the chamber. Its function is to pre-
vent the roller from moving in a reverse
so backward'direction until intentionally lifted
by human agency. One end of the display-strip D is fastened on the roller E and is con-
tinued forward and around an idler H, thence
up in front of the open portion of the com-
partment, in which space it is displayed to'55
view, and at the upper front corner of the
chamber passes around another idler-roller I,
and thence passes rearward and around a
spring-roller J. This spring-roller J is pref-
erably made upon a planrbf construction simi- 6o
lar to that used in the ordinary spring-roller
curtains now in use; but any suitable mode
of causing it to revolve strongly in a given
direction, so as to roll up the strip D upon it
as fast as permitted and to elastically resist 65
the unrolling of the strip D from it, may be
-employed.
The sprocket - strap K engages with the
sprocket - wheel G and also with another
sprocket-wheel H, fixed at some suitable point' 70
within reach of the motorman or conductor
or other person operating the station-indica-
tor, as the case may be. This strap K (a
small portion of which is shown enlarged in
Fig. 2 below that portion of it which is at- 75
tached to the sprocket-wheel G in Fig, ? hab
marked upon it at proper intervals the names
of the stations in their proper order of se-
quence and corresponding in number and
identity to those marked i large letters upon 8o
the strip D.
The mode in which thisApparatus operates
is as follows: At the beginning of the trip all'
of the curtain or display-strip is unwound off
the roller E and wound upon roller J, with 85
the exception, of course, of, the portion that
is stretched from roller E around the idler-
rollers H I to the spring-Troller J. If the
proper name is displayed un the display-
strip for starting, the operator waits untilthe 90
next station is reached befo e operatingthe
machine; otherwise he immediately turns the
sprocket-wheel H so as to biing the proper
name for the, station next to be reached into
view in the compartment. le is enabled to 95
do this without looking at what is displayed
from the chamber or (compartment by means,
of the indicating-names upon the sprocket-
wheel strap. As the necessity arises for the
notification of the station about to be reached zoo
the operator moves the sprocket-chain II so
as to bring this name of the strap to a given
