DEE W. WILHELM, OF DE LEON, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN H. WILLIAMS,
OF DE LEON, TEXAS.
WAGON OR VEHICLE TONGUE SUPPORT.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16,1912.
Application filed September 25, 1911. Serial No. 651,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEn W. WILHELM, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
De Leon, in the county of Comanche and
5 State of Texas, have invented a new and
useful Wagon or Vehicle Tongue Support,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in
vehicle tongue or draft-bar supports, espe-
io cially that class utilizing resiliency to re-
lieve the weight of the tongue or draft upon
the neck of the team.
The invention has for its object to carry
out the aforesaid ends in a simple, effective
15 and inexpensive manner.
The invention consists of certain instru-
mentalities and features substantially as
hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by
the claims.
20 In the accompanying drawing illustrat-
ing the preferred embodiment of my inven-
tion wherein it will be understood that va-
rious changes and modifications may be
made which relate to the details of the con-
25 struction and arrangement of the parts
without departing from the spirit of my in-
vention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspec-
tive of the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge ele-
30 nation. Fig. 3 is a plan.
In carrying out my invention, I suitably
provide upper members and lower mem-.
bers, the former or upper members prefer-
ably including three plates designated 1, 1
35 and 2 and the latter including three plates
3, 3 and 4. The intermediate or central
plate 2 of the upper members and the cor-
responding plate 4 of the lower members,
are each connected to the other plates of
40 the upper and lower members, respectively,
by means of suitable nut-equipped bolts 5
and 6 respectively. The respective plates
of the upper and lower members are all pro-
vided with longitudinal slots for the recep-
45 tion of the bolts 5 and 6, the slots of said
plates being designated as 2a and 4, respec-
tively. The end-plates of the upper- and
lower members are connected by bolt-like
members or stems 7, suitably held to the
50 latter, preferably by heading their lower
ends and inserting cross-pins or keys 8
through their upper ends, said bolt-like
members or stems being equipped or having
applied thereto springs 9 interposed betweenthe end plates I and 3. This arrangement 55
serves as a resilient buffer for the inner end
of the tongue or draft-bar 10 and adjunc-
tive parts, whereby, it is apparent that the
preponderant weight of the outer or un-
supported end of the draft-bar or tongue 60
will be removed from the necks of the draft-
animals, as desirable. Also by means of the
bolt and slot connections between the respec-
tive upper and lower members of the de-
vice, it is accommodated to varying widths 65
of the parts of different sized vehicles.
The device is suitably applied or secured
in position upon the front vehicle-hounds,
by means preferably of U-shaped bolts or
keepers 11 receiving or embracing metal 70
brace-members 12 of said hounds and passed
through and held to the upper end plates
1, by nuts as shown.
It will be noted that-my invention is ex-
tremely simple, therefore being inexpensive 75
of manufacture and adapted to be readily
applied for use in connection with vehicles
generally without any especial fitting or
adapting of the same in effecting such ap-
plication, it only being necessary to effect 80
connection between the front vehicle hounds
as indicated, the device delivering its re-
sisting action upon the inner end of the
draft-bar or tongue to suitably take the
weight thereof from the necks of the ani- 85
mals, as before stated.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described,
including parallel spaced apart members,
each member comprising a central plate, and 90
end-plates, means effecting adjustable con-
nection between said central and end-plates,
means effecting the attachment of the up-
per end-plates to vehicle-hounds, resilient
members interposed between the upper and 95
lower end-plates, and bolt-like members ex-
tending through said resilient members, and
having their lower ends headed into said
lower end-plates and their upper ends mov-
able through said upper end-plates and 100
means to hold said bolt-like members
against displacement with respect to the
latter end-plates.
2. A tongue or pole, vehicle-hounds, par-
allel upper and lower members, each in- 105
eluding a central plate and end-plates,
means connecting together each central plate
and two end-plates, means connecting the1,014,928.
