freely than it ordinarily would. The weight
should be clamped upon the bar 9 in such a
position that it will exactly counter-balance
the weight of the vane 10, so that the cowl
5 will be balanced relative to its pivotal cen-
ter, and will rotate readily without noise or
-friction.
The details and proportion of parts in the
above described device may be varied in a
10 number of ways without departing from
the spirit of the invention, and the same is.
therefore, presented as covering all such
changes and modifications as may be in-
cluded within the scope of the following
15 claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a chimney cowl, the combination
with a base adapted to be clamped upon a
chimney top, of a curved elbow forming a
20 quarter turn, pivotally mounted upon the
base, a vane projecting from said elbow in
the direction of its outlet, a weight by which
the vane is counter-balanced, a screen hori-
zontally positioned within the elbow, and
25 adapted to rotate therewith, and brushesstationary within the elbow contacting with
the screen.
2. In a chimney cowl, the combination
with a base adapted to be clamped upon a
chimney top, of a vertical rod centrally 30
mounted in said base and projecting above
the same, a revoluble curved elbow com-
municating with said bar and forming a
quarter turn, a horizontal bar passing
through the elbow parallel to the direction 35
of its discharge and supported by said ver-
tical rod, a vane carried at one extremity
of said bar, a weight adjustable upon the
other extremity of said bar, a screen hori-
zontally positioned within the elbow and 40
adapted to rotate therewith, and a station-
ary brush contacting with the screen.
In testimony whereof I have signed my
name tc this specification in the presence of
two subscribing witnesses.
