tions and engaging the. respective rails of
the track. The rails and, ties are thus se=
curely held together at predetermined angles
and it obviously becomes impossible for the
5 rails to spread or tilt o for the ties to creep
longitudmnally of the rails. Moreover,
should either rail becomn broken at a point
between two of the ties the brace engaging
the rail will serve to suport it and thus re-
10 dice to the minimum the danger of derail-
unent. It will be noted that it is not neces-
sary to produce " rights " and "lefts ", as the
brace can be used upoi either rail of the
track.. Moreover,. it can be applied to rails
15 of a track already laid and will therefore be
found especially desirable in strengthening
tracks already in use particularly at points
where they are subjected to severe strains.
Importance is attached to the fact that
20 when braces such as herein described are
used ballast' can be partly or entirely dis-
pensed with, especially on bridges. This is
particularly desirable on bridges and similar
structures.
25 What is claimed is:
1. As a new article of manufacture means
attachable to a tie for holding a rail- in
fixed relation thereto, said means compris-
ing an elongated strip, and opposed pairs
10 of spaced rail engaging jaws located at one
end of the strip.
2. As an article of manufacture means
attachable to a tie for holding a rail in
fixed relation to said tie, said means con-
35 prising an elongated strip and opposed
pairs of rail engaging jaws integral there-
with, the two pairs of jaws being spaced
apart a distance greater than the width of
a rail base.'
40 3. As an article of manufacture a rail
brace comprising an elongated strip and
oppositely disposed pairs of jaws integral
with the strip, the two pairs of jaws being
spaced apart a distance greater than the
45 width of a rail base and having undercut
gripping faces.
4. As an article of manufacture a rail
brace comprising an elongated strip and
oppositely disposed pairs of jaws upon the
50 strip, the two pairs of jaws being spaced
apart a distance greater than the width of
a rail base, each jaw having, an undercut
gripping face.
- . As an article of manufacture a rail
55 brace comprising an elongated strip and
oppositely disposed pairs of jaws integral
with the strip, the two pairs of jaws being
spaded apart a distance greater than the
width of a rail.-base and having diagonally
.0 undercut gripping faces.
6. As an articTe of manufacture a railbrace comprising an elongated strip having
an opening therein for the reception of se-
curing means, and oppositely disposed pairs
of rail engaging jaws upon the strip, the 65
two pairs of jaws being spaced apart a
distance greater than the width of a rail
base, said jaws having undercut gripping
faces.
7. As an article of manufacture a rail 70
brace comprising an elongated strip having
I an apertured end for the reception of se-
I curing means, and oppositely disposed pairs
of jaws upon the strip and spaced apart a
distance greater than the width of a rail 75
base, said jaws having undercut gripping
faces, said strip having an intermediate
bent portion and a reinforcing web adja-
cent thereto.
8. As an article of manufacture a rail 80
brace comprising an elongated strip, rail
engaging devices thereon, said strip being
bent at an intermediate point, and a rein-
forcing web adjacent the bend.
9. As an article of manufacture a rail 8
.brace comprising an elongated strip, oppo-
sitely disposed rail engaging jaws thereon
spaced apart a distance greater than the-
width of a rail base, said jaws having un-
dercut gripping faces, laterally extending 90
ears interposed between and extending be-
yond the jaws, and means adjustably mount-
ed within each ear for engaging a rail in-
serted between the jaws.
10. The combination with ties and rails 95
secured thereon; of diagonally disposed
braces secured upon the ties and extending
under the rails, each brace having spaced
jaws engaging opposite base flanges of a
rail. 100
11. The combination with ties and rails
thereon; of diagonally disposed brace strips
extending over and secured to the ties and
projecting under the rails, and spaced jaws
upon the strips and having undercut grip- 105
ping faces frictionally engaging opposite
oase flanges of a rail.
12. The combination with ties and rails
secured thereon; of diagonally disposed
braces secred upon the tiesand extending 110
fnder the rails, each brace having spaced
jaws engaging opposite base flanges of a
rail, and means adjustably connected to
each strip foi engaging the bottom surface
of. the rail thereon. 116
In testimony that I claim the foregoing
as my own, I have hereto affixed my signa.-
ture in the presence of two witnesses.
