EDWIN OSiER\iN YO(R WOOD, OF' MA('NE, TEXAS
HOE.
SPECIFICATION forming pait of Letters Patent No 616,201, dated Decembei au, 1898.
Application fildl DocembCi 27, 1897, Seil'd No 663,627, 'No model)To (ll hoii // iay (JI/i'( / my
Be it known that I, Enwix s0iimN Non-
WooD, a citizen of the Viiited States, iesiding
at Macune, in the county of San Augustine
5 and State of Texas, haN e invented a new aiid
useful Hoe, of w ich the following is a speci-
fication.
My invention relates-to garden-tools, and
particularly to hoes of the various types, with
io special reference to means w hereby a hoe,
rake, or other tool-blade is a t tiehed to the
handle to facilitate tletachmiieiit \lien not in
use or to facilitate the replacemeni t of a broken
handle; and the object in view is to jpro ide
15 a handle-attaching device w uh1ili does not tne-
cessitate a special construction of' handle
Further objects and advantages of this iII-
vention will appear in the follow ing (lescrip-
tiuiitid thet, no 1i fe met iii C. iiie t' w iii i)e 1)1-
20 t icularly pointed out in Ithe appended claim
In the Irawings, FiguI e 1 is a perspective
view of a tool of the hoe class lia iiig its blade
secured to the handle by an attaching device
embodying niy invent ioa. ig 2 is a central
25 sectional view of the same. Fig 3 is a detail
view of the follower or clamp-plate. Fig. I
is a ttansveise section of the eye.
Similat numerals of i efei ence indicate cor-
responding pat ts in all the figuii es of the di aw-
30 ings
1 designates a tool-blade, integial with
which is foiled an open-eilde(l eye 2, slightly
tapered toward the iear or ftoni the plane of
the blade aiid arramiged at Is front end 11ish
35 with the outer surface of the blade. The
handle 3 is prefer ably tapered slightly towat d
the grip end foe insertion into the eye from
the front side of the blade, and extendingZ
through the eye is a follower or clamp-plate
4o 4, having upturned or deflected extreiiiities 5
located beyond the extremities of the upper
side of the eye in contact therewith to pre-
vent endwise displacement ot the plate Co-
operating wvitlh this follow er or clam p-plate
45 is a set-screw 0, threaded i ia suitable open-
ing in the upper side of the e3 e and iiiiping-
ing terminally iupoiithe plate at an intermie-
diate point to force it into efficient fi ictional
contact with the upper side of the handle.
so To prevent turning of the handle in the eye,
the upper side of the former is preferably flat-
tened slightly, as shiowln in Fig. I, the tinde'or inner surface of the follower or clani1-p.
being approximately flat, while the upper or
otter sim face thereof is convexed to conform 55
to the concave inner surface of the eye.
An advantage of the above-described con-
struction resides in the fact that w hue both
ends of the socket arc open to prevent the re-
tention of moisture theiein the detachment 6o
of the handle can be accomplished with fa-
cility and that in addition to being readily
displaceable the handle can be firmly secured
to the blade to resist any strain liable to be
applied to the tool when in use Further- 65
inoi1, the slight tapering of the handle and
ot the eye in w inch it is fitted prevents the
cndw iSC (1 isplacemient thereof when a (iraw-
iig strain is applied thereto.
The head of the set-screw G is preferably 70
looped to form a rod-seat adapted to be en-
gaged by a suitable rod or bar to facilitate
the turning of the set-screw and insure the
proper seating of the follower or clamp-plate
upon the surface of the handle. 75
having described my invention, what I
claim is--
The combination of a tool-blade har ing an
open-ended eye, extending rearwardly from
the plane of the blade and interiorly tapered $o
toward its rear end, a handle tapered toward
its grip end and removably fitted in said eye,
the upper side of the handle, within the eye,
being flattened, a follower or clamp-plate
seated w ithin the eye upon said flattened por- 85
tion of the handle, said follower exceeding
the eye in length and having upturned ex-
treinities ai aged in contact with the oppo-
site ends of the eye to piec ent endwise dis-
placement and allow adjustment of the fol- 90
low or, toward and from f-he piane of the han-
dIe, to take up looseness of die latter in the
eye, and a set-screw threaded in a Isocket in
the upper side of the eye and impinging ter-
initally upon the follower at an intermediate 95
point, to maintain it in frictional contact with
the handle, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
the presence of two w itnesses.
