UNITED

PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. HYER, OF WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS
TO A. D. ANDERSON AND EDGAR M. WINFREY, OF SAME PLACE.
STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,221, dated January 1,1901.
Application filed January 18, 1900. Serial No. 1,929. (No model. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. HYER,a citi-
zen of the United States, residing at Wichita
Falls, in the county of Wichita and State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Stoppers; and I do-declare
the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-
scription of the invention, such as will enable
others skilled in the art to which it appertains
Yo to make and use the same.
The invention relates to stoppers, and more
particularly to a combined stopper and funnel
adapted to be used for pouring liquids from
one vessel to another without wasting, pro-
15 vision being made for pouring the liquid
into a large vessel or into a small vessel, and
when the stopper is not in use it may be closed
for the purpose of preventing leakage and
evaporation.
20 The object of the invention is to provide a
stopper of this character which shall be sim-
ple of construction, durable in use, and corm-
paratively inexpensive of production.
With this object in view the invention con-
25 sists in certain novel features of construction
and combination of parts, which will be here-
inafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is
a side elevation showing my stopper applied.
30 Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the body of the
stopper, preferably tapering from one end to
the other and provided with an elastic band
or gasket to insure a tight fit with the neck
35 of the vessel. The body portion is. open at
its lower end and closed at its upper end.
2 - denotes radially - arranged discharge-
spouts which communicate with the interior
of the body of the stopper and having taper-
40 ing outlets 3.
4 denotes a valve-plug tapering from its up-
per to its lower end, and 5 denotes a stem or
handle connected to the plug and extending
up through the top of the body 1.The tubular discharge-spouts are of differ- 45
ent sizes, so that when pouring from the ves-
sel into a vessel having a large mouth the
large discharge-spout may be used and when
pouring into a vessel having a small mouth
the small spout may be used. To close the 50
stopper, the plug is forced downward until it
firmly engages the sides of the body 1 and pre-
vents the passage of the liquid beyond the
same.
From the foregoing description, taken in 55
connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction, operation, and advantages
of my improved stopper will be readily ap-
parent without requiring an extended expla-
nation. 6o
The device is extremely simple, may be
made at small cost, and is exceedingly useful
for the purpose for which it is desired.
It will of course be understood that various
changes in the form, proportion, and the minor 65
details of construction may be resorted to
without departing from the principle orsacri-
ficing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 70
Letters Patent of the United States, is-
- A stopper consisting of a body portion taper-
ing from one end to the other and having its
upper end closed and its lower end open,
said body portion being provided at its sides, 75
intermediate its ends, with radially-disposed
discharge-pipes of different diameters, and a
tapering valve-plug arranged within the hol-
low body and provided with a rod or stem
that projects upwardly through the closed end 8o
of the body, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
my hand in presence of two subscribing wit-
nesses.
WILLIAM D. HYER.
