UNITED

PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL ALFRED HAINES, OF GARRETT,-TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM II.
SPARE, OF ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH.
IPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 697,940, dated April 15, 1902.
Application filed April 5, 1901. Serial No. 54,532, (No model.)10 all whom it iay coce7n7:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL ALFRED
I-IAINES, a citizen of the United States, resid-
ing at Garrett, in the county of Ellis and
5 State of Texas, have invented a new and use-
ful Wrench, of which the following is a speci-
fication.
This invention relates to certain improve-
ments in axle-nut wrenches in which the
1o wrench may be engaged with the wheel in
such manner that the nut may be unscrewed
by rotating the wheel.
The principal object of the invention is to
provide a device of simple and economical
15 construction which may be readily applied to
the nut and wheel-hub, as more fully set
forth hereinafter.
In the drawings forming a portion of this
specification, and in which like numerals of
20 reference indicate similar parts in the several
views, Figure 1 is a perspective view show-
ing the complete wrench. Fig. 2 is a sec-
tional view taken longitudinally of the wheel-
gripping jaws and showing the wrench ap-
25 plied, the extremities of the handles of the
jaws being shown in elevation.
Referring now to the drawings, the pres-
ent wrench consists of a cross-sectionally-an-
gular socket portion 5 of box shape and hav-
30 ing such dimensions as to snugly receive the
end of an axle-nut to be removed or applied,
and two of the diametrically opposite sides 6
of this socket portion are continued rear-
wardly to form ears 7, through which are
35 passed the two pivot bolts or rods 8 and 9 ad-
jacent to the side edges of the ears, but
spaced inwardly from the ends of the ears.
Two jaws are provided, each consisting of
a gripping portion 10, having a transversely-
40 curved outer face and a flat inner face, said
jaw also including a handle portion 11, curved
in such manner that when the flat faces of
the gripping portions are disposed toward
each other these handles will diverge rear-
45 wardly with compound curves. The handles
are transversely corrugated, as shown at 12.
The jaws are disposed with their grippingportions 10 between the ears 7 and have ears
13, which are perforated to receive the pivot
bolts or rods 8 and 9, the positions of the jaws 50
being such that when they are moved toward
each other their flat inner faces will fit against
the outer opposite faces of the nut-receiving
socket portion, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the
drawings. Thus the portion 5 with the grip- 55
ping ends of the jaws may be entered in the
end of a very small wheel-hub. to receive a
nut in the socket, and the handles may be
then operated to expand the jaws and im-
pinge the outer curved faces thereof against 6o
the inner surface of the wheel-hub, and to
hold the jaws in this position a ring 15 is pro-
vided and is slipped over the handles and is
adapted to engage in the corrugations of the
latter, so that the ring will be held securely 65
from slipping. By then rotating the wheel
the socket portion will be rotated and there-
with the axle-nut to disengage the latter.
In order that the wrench may be used for
other purposes and also to provide a handle 70
for the socket portion 5 that will permit of
rotation thereof independently of the wheel
to start the nut when it holds exceptionally
fast, a handle or lever 16 is provided and ex-
tends laterally from one of the ears 7 of the 75
socket-piece and at right angles thereto, and
the extremity of this handle portion or lever
is notched, as shown at 17, to receive nuts of
different sizes.
What is claimed is- 8o
An axle-nut wrench comprising an angu-
lar socket portion adapted to extend partially
within the wheel-hub to engage the nut, an
integral handle extending from the socket
portion at an angle to the axis thereof, said 85
socket portion having two rearwardly - ex-
tended oppositely - disposed walls forming
spaced pivot-ears, jaws pivoted between the
ears at points within the external lines of said
socket portion, the inner flat faces of said 90
jaws being adapted to fit snugly against the
exterior walls of the socket member to per-
mit of the entrance of the wrench within a
small wheel-hub and the outer faces of said
