UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. LAVIER, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
WRENCH.No. 849,248.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS -H. LAVER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas,
in the county of Dallas, State of Texas, have
5 invented certain new and useful Improve-
ments in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare
the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-
scription of the invention, such as will enable
others skilled in the art to which it apper-
1a tains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to wrenches
generally, but is particularly designed for
employment on pipes, and hence falls in the
class commonly called "pipe-wrenches."
15 It is the object of the invention to provide
improvements that will enhance the efficiency
of pipe-wrenches in points of strength, quick-
ness of action, durability, and certainty of
operation, as well as improvements that will
20 make them capable of doing the work of ordi-
nary pipe-wrenches, and, beside, of supplant-
ing the functions of specially-designed tools-
as, for mere example, that of chain tongs or
wrenches.
25 Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva-
tion of my improved pipe-wrench, partly
broken away. Fig. 2 is a transverse section
through the front saddle of the wrench. Fig.
3 is a transverse section through the rear
30 saddle of the wrench.
In the drawings, 5 designates the handle
and stationary bar provided on its forward
end with a removable jaw 6.
7 designates the sliding or adjustable bar
35 provided on its forward end with a fixed jaw
S, as is usual in wrenches of this class.
Immediately to the rear of the jaws is the
front saddle or strap 9, that passes over the
sliding bar and downward, engaging the sides
40 of the said bar and the sides of the fixed bar
between two parallel ribs 10 and 11 formed
on the latter part.
12 is a helical spring resting on the strap 13,
connecting the lower ends of the saddle 9 be-
45 low the bar 5 and at its upper end extending
up into a recess 14 in the bar 5. The said
spring operates to yieldably hold the saddle
9 down on the bar 7.
The bottom surface of the bar 5, rearwardly
50 of its jaw for a necessary distance, is provided
with what may be called "rearwardly-in-
clined teeth" 15, that are adapted to fit and
engage the forwardly-inclined teeth 16,
formed on the upper side of the strap 17, ex-
55 tending longitudinally between the legs 18patented April 2, 1907.
of the main or rear saddle 19. The latter is
made substantially hollow in its upper part,
through which the upper or sliding bar -7
passes and has the aforesaid depending legs
extending down and engaging the sides of the 6o
bar 5.
The main saddle 19 is formed with a parti-
tion 20, which is engaged by the pending pro-
jection 21 on the rear end of the sliding bar 7
when the wrench is in use. 65
A bowed spring 22 is secured at its middle
to the under side of the bar 7 and has its ends
resting upon the upper surface of the bar 5.
Its tendency is to yieldably hold the teeth
15 and 16 in engagement one with the other, 70
but at the same time to allow the main sad-
dle to be depressed and said teeth to be dis-
engaged, so that the bar 7, with the saddles,
may be adjusted back and forth on the bar
5 to bring the jaws into contact with the 75
pipe.
A screw-threaded bolt 23 is tapped
through the main saddle and passes through
the bar 7, holding the latter in place and al-
lowing of a slight rocking of the bar 7 thereon 8o
on operating the handle to release the pipe
gripped between the jaws.
It will be understood by those skilled in
the art that in the operation of the wrench
it will act with great force in tending to turn 85
the pipe gripped by the jaws and that there
will be relatively little or no tendency to
crush the pipe between the jaws.
What is claimed as the invention is-
1. In a pipe-wrench, the combination 90
with the handle-bar and' its jaw, the niov-
able bar and its jaw, the front saddle engag-
ing both bars, teeth on the handle-bar, the
main saddle on the movable bar provided
with a partition extending from side to side 95
below the latter bar and having teeth en-
gaging the teeth on the handle-bar, the
movable bar being further provided with a
projection to engage said partition.
2. In a pipe --wrench, the combination ioa
with the handle-bar and its jaw, vertical
parallel ribs on the sides of the handle-bar
in rear of its jaw, teeth on the under side of
said bar, of the front saddle extending over
I the movable bar and downward along the 105
sides of the handle-bar between said vertical
ribs, a spring interposed between the lower
part of the forward saddle and the handle-
bar for drawing the said saddle down on the
movable bar, the main saddle on the mov- [1oSpecification. of Letters Patent.
