jaw, I provide a spring-latch 16, having one
end of its spring-shank secured to the outer
end of the bracket 4, with its rear free end
provided with a head or shoulder 17 to en-
5 gage the rear side of the free end of the
keeper, and thereby detachably hold the lat-
ter against the jaw to maintain the latter in a
rigid condition after being set to any adjust-
ed position. It is preferred to bevel the free
ro ends of the swinging keeper and the latch-
head in order that these members may readily
snap into mutual engagement when the keeper
is forced forwardly into engagement with the
stud of the movable jaw. The enlarged head
15 or shoulder 17 of the latch forms a finger-
piece for convenience in releasing the latch
from the keeper. When the keeper has been
disengaged from the movable jaw, the latter
may be moved rearwardly and shifted into
20 engagement with any of the seats or notches
in the front walls of the openings 6, so as to
adjust the jaw with respect to the fixed jaw,
and the movable jaw may also be tilted upon
its pivot-pins 11 to set the movable jaw at an
25 inclination to the fixed jaw, so as to accom-
modate the wrench to pipes, bars, and other
substantially cylindrical objects.
From the foregoing description it is appar-
ent that the movable jaw of the present wrench
30 is capable of being quickly and conveniently
adjusted, both bodily and tiltably, and is nor-
mally maintained in a rigid condition and held
against working loose during the manipula-
tion of the wrench. Moreover, the movable
35 jaw may be readily released to permit of its
adjustment, and the locking parts may be
readily reassembled to lock the movable jaw.
Having thus described the construction and
operation of my invention, what I claim as
40 new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
is-
1. A wrench comprising a stock having a
fixed jaw, a normally fixed adjustable jaw
capable of a bodily adjustment toward and
45 away from the fixed jaw and also capable of
a tiltable adjustment, and means to lock the
adjustable jaw against bodily and tiltable
movements.
2. A wrench comprising a stock having afixed jaw and a laterally-projected bracket, a
jaw carried by the bracket and capable of ad-
justment bodily toward and away from the
fixed jaw and also of being tiltably adjusted
upon the bracket, and means to lock the ad-
justable jaw against bodily and tiltable move-
ments.
3. A wrench comprising a stock having a
fixed jaw and a lateral bracket, a series of
bearing-seats carried by the bracket, a jaw
having a fulcrum-pin capable of engagement
with the individual members of the series of
bearings to rotate therein, and means to lock
the movable jaw against tiltable and bodily
movements.
4. A wrench comprising a stock having a
fixed jaw, a lateral bracket carried by the
stock and provided with a longitudinal slot
intersecting the front and rear edges of the
bracket, the opposite sides of the bracket be-
ing provided with corresponding openings
having registered notches formed in their
front walls, a movable jaw. having opposite
pivot-pins movable in the opening for engage-
ment with the respective bearing-notches, and
means to lock the movable jaw.
5. A wrench comprising a stock having a
fixed jaw and a lateral bracket, an adjustable
jaw carried by the bracket, a swinging keeper
carried by the stock for engagement with the
movable jaw, and a latch carried by the
bracket for engagement with the keeper.
6. A wrench comprising a stock having a
fixed jaw, a lateral bracket carried by the
stock and provided with a series of bearings,
an adjustable jaw having a journal for rota-
table engagement with the series of bearings,
a swinging keeper carried by the stock and
provided with a series of seats to receive one
end of the movable jaw, and a latch carried by
the bracket for engagement with the keeper.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
the presence of two witnesses.
