DESIGN FOR A RAILROAD-SPIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,624, dated September 7, 1897
Application filed June 30, 1897, Serial No, 643,033. Term of patent 14 years,To all whom C may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY N. BANKS, a citi-
zen of the United States, residing at Kmgs-
land, in the county of Llano and State of
5 Texas, have invented and produced a new
and original Design for Barbed Railroad-
Spikes; and I do hereby declare the following
to be a full, clear, and exact description of
the same, reference being had to the accom-
io panyiu drawings, forming a part thereof
My invention relates to a design for a barbed
railroad-spike, and is illustrated in the acconm-
panying drawings, in which-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a railroad-
15 spike embodying my design Fig. 2is a front
elevation of the same. Fig 3 is a side eleva-
tion, and Fig. 4 is an opposite side elevation

in the following description
20 1 represents the body of the spike, which
is rectangular in cross-section, as shown, and
the two sides 2 2 being straight and parallel
with each other and smooth-surfaced for
their entire length, while the back portion 3
25 forms a true plane from the head 4 to the
point 5, and the front face C is parallel with
the back portion for its entire length, except
as it nears the point, thence diagonally to the
point 5, forming the beveled face 7.
3o The head 4 is formed with a flange 8, which
extends over the front face 6, the inner orunder face J of the head forming an obtuse
angle of about fifty-five degrees with the face
C of the body of the spike. The head 4 is
also formed with a flat diagonal face 9' on its 35
upper and rear side, as shown.
10101tepresent a parallel series of V-shaped
diagonal grooves formed in each of the par-
allel sides 2 2, decreasing in depth from their
front edges to about two-thirds of the width, 40
as shown, and said grooves on the one side
are beveled oppositely to the corresponding
grooves on the opposite side
