14. Clamping-links 28, which are provided
at their front ends with T-heads 29 and at
their rear ends with laterally-extending eyes
30, are disposed between the bars14a of stand-
5 ards 14, and their T-heads 29 are adapted to
bear on the upper sides of the said shovels or
points. The bolts 31, which are employed to
clamp the shovels or points to their standards,
pass between the bars of the latter through
10 the eyes 30 of the clamping-links, and their
nuts or taps 32 bear against the rear sides of
the said eyes 30. Hence the said bolts coop-
erate with the said clamping-links to secure
the points or shovels against vertical dis-
15 placement on the standards and enable the
said points or shovels to be adjusted verti-
cally and clamped to the standards at any
desired point.
By attaching appropriate points or shovels
2 to the standards our improved plow may be
used for barring off between the rows of
plants and sweeping earth up toward the
plants when cultivating a cotton crop. Our
improved plow may be also used, when pro-
25 vided with appropriate points or shovels, for
bedding and listing the soil or for banking or
breaking out the rows. It will be understood
that by appropriately adjusting the stand-
ards and the wheel 6 the points or shovels may
30 be caused to run in the soil to any desired
depth. The wheel 6, which operates in the
furrows in rear of the points or shovels, ma-
terially lessens the labor to the plowman.
At the end of a row, before turning, the
35 handles should be depressed to elevate the
points or shovels, thereby supporting the plow
entirely upon the wheel G,when the plow may
be readily turned without appreciable effort
on the part of the plowman. The wheel 6,
40 which operates in rear of the plow, also en-
ables the plow to be readily moved to any
part of the field without permitting the points
or shovels to cut the surface of the soil. By
having the points or shovels and the wheelin line with each other and directly in the 45
line of draft under the beam the plow is en-
abled to run very steadily and evenly with-
out deviation from a straight line and is
adapted to be readily guided.
Our improved plow is exceedingly cheap 50
and simple, is very strong and durable, and is
entirely practical and efficient in operation.
Having thus described our invention, we
claim-
1. In a plow, the combination of a beam, 55
handles pivotally connected at their lower
front ends thereto, a standard comprising a
pair of bars, disposed on opposite sides of the
beam and pivotally connected thereto, the
upper ends of said bars being adjustably at- 6o
tached to said handles, and a wheel mounted
between the lower portions of said bars, sub-
stantially as described.
2. In a cultivator-plow, the combination of
a beam, a standard having its upper end 65
forked, to provide arms which bear against
opposite sides of the beam, clamping -bolts
connecting said arms above and below the
beam, whereby the upper end of the standard
is adjustable longitudinally of the beam, an 70
adjusting-plate on the latter, notched on its
upper side, a brace-link connected to said
standard, extending forwardly and upwardly
therefrom and provided with arms which
bear against opposite sides of said beam, 75
and bolts connecting said arms and extend-
ing transversely above and below the beam,
the upper of said bolts engaging said notched
adjusting-plate, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as 8o
our own we have hereto affixed our signatures
in the presence of two witnesses.
