UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC POLK DAVIS, OF IlUNGERFORD, TEXAS.
HARNESS-HAME ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,125, dated August 30, 1898.
Application filed May 27, 1897. Serial No. 638478. (No model.)To all whom t may concern-
Be it known that I, ISAAC POLK DAVIS, of
IIungerford, in the county of Wharton and
State of Texas, have invented certain new and
5 useful Improvements in Harness-IHames; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to
which it appertains to make and use the same.
To This invention relates to harness-hames;
and it consists of the construction and ar-
rangement of the several parts, which will be
more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a
15 hame of a strong and durable construction,
simple in its arrangement, and having means
of ready application of the necessary devices
used in connection with harness attachments.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is
20 a perspective view of a hame embodying the
invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line x x,
Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of
one of the attachments. Fig. 4 is a similar
view of another of the attachments.
25 Referring to the drawings, wherein similar
numerals of reference are employed to indi-
cate corresponding parts in the several views,
the numeral 1 designates a hame which is
preferably constructed of wood and has an
30 inner curved contour to properly lie against
the body of the animal to which it is applied
and which is a well-known construction. The
lower end is slightly flattened, as at 2-that
is,the thickness is reduced-which is also well
35 known in the art, and for the purpose of dis-
pensing with the use of a collar the outer face
of each hame is flat, as at 3, with a rise or
elevation 4 near the lower portion thereof
and situated about two-thirds of the length
40 of the hame as an entirety from the top
thereof. Mounted on the enlargement 4 is a
fastening 5, consisting of a base-plate hav-
ing an outwardly-projecting inwardly-extend-
ing hook 6, formed with an arrow-head 7, the
45 latter being slightly inclined inward toward
the base-plate and is adapted to be used for
the attachment of the trace-chains. At the
opposite end of the said plate 5 is a second
fastening consisting of an outwardly-project-
5o in lug 8, which is concave on opposite sides,
as at 9, and formed with a head 10, having a
groove 11, said head being convex in generaloutline, and the groove 11 therein forming a
seat for a staple 12, which is driven through
the openings 13 through the plate 5 on oppo- 55
site sides of the lug and with the said con-
cavities 9 forming spaces for the attachment
of ordinary devices and especially for a ring
4, to which the front parts of the harness are
secured. By covering the head of the lug, 6o
as set forth, the formation of an interfering
projection is avoided and the parts of har-
ness moving thereover will not be caught and
held with consequent disadvantage and in-
convenience. The outward extension of the 65
enlargement 4 and the position of the plate
5 thereon, as set forth, throw the trace-chains
outwardly far enough to prevent them from
pressing against the shoulders of the animal
while pulling. 70
At the bottom of the hame and extending
inwardly therefrom is a securing-iron 15, con-
sisting of a fastening- plate 16, having an arm
17 projecting outwardly and inwardly there-
from and constructed at its free end with a 75
strap-loop 18 for receiving the connecting-
strap 19, used in attaching the lower ends of
two adjacently - situated devices. Between
the fastening-plate 16 and the outer loop 18
the said arm 17 has an opening 20 formed 8o
therein, through which a rope or analogous
device is adapted to be passed and provides
a convenient form of securement. The ar-
rangement of the fastening-iron, as set forth,
prevents the hame from turning too far back 85
during the time the strain is applied thereto.
The upper ends of the hames have suitable
terret-rings 21 attached thereto and also pro-
vided with slots or openings 22, through which
the upper fastening-strap 23 extends, the lat- 90
ter carrying therewith a leather shield or pad
24 of well-known form or construction. The
fastening-iron and the devices set forth at the
upper part of the hames contribute to com-
plete the efficiency of the entire device in ad- 95
dition to the novelty which resides particu-
larly in the plate 5 and the parts attached
thereto.
It will be understood that the hame as here-
with described is intended to be used in con- i0
nection with a heavy draft-harness and is con-
structed in a manner specified to relieve the
strain as much as possible usually brought to
bear on the shoulder of the animal and also
