SHAM-BOLSTER FRAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,134, dated January 14, 1902.

Be it known that I, LEONTINA GULLY, a citi-
zen of the United States, residing at Uvalde,
in the county of Uvalde and State of Texas,
5 have invented a new and useful Sham-Bolster
Frame, of which the following is a specifica-
tion.
This invention relates to sham - bolster
frames, and more particularly to that class
to that are lengthwise adjustable to admit of
their being used with beds of any width.
The object of the invention is to provide a
cheap,durable,light, and thoroughly-effective
device for the purpose in which the parts shall
15 be so constructed and assembled as to permit
ready lengthwise adjustment and in which
damage to or derangement of the parts in
handling will be reduced to a minimum.
A further object is to provide for a thor-
20 oughly-efficient holding or assembling of the
parts together.
With these and other objects in view the
invention consists in the novel construction
and combination of parts of the sham-bolster
25 frame, as will be hereinafter fully described
and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a
part of the specification, and in which like
numerals of reference indicate corresponding
30 parts,I have illustrated a form of embodiment
of my invention capable of carrying my ideas
into effect, it being understood that the con-
struction and arrangement of parts therein
shown may be modified or changed without
35 departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in per-
spective of the bolster - frame, the sections
being shown as extended. Fig. 2 is a view in
transverse section taken through one of the
4o center bands. Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal
section taken through one of the end bands
adjacent to one of the ribs. Fig. 4 is a detail
view of a slightly-modified form of center
band.
45 In the drawings I have exhibited a bolster-
frame composed of two sections 1 and 2, hav-
ing a telescopic connection with each other;
but it is to be understood that I do not limit
myself to this number, as more than two sec-tions may be employed. Each section com- 50
prices a plurality of return-bend ribs 3, an end
band 4, constituting a rib-retainer, and a cen-
ter band 5, constituting a combined rib guide
and retainer. Each of the ribs 3 is made of a
piece of wire of suitable thickness bent upon 55
itself to present a U-shaped structure, the
bends of the ribs being disposed toward the
center of the frame and the ends being se-
cured in the bands 4, as clearly shown in Fig.
3. The band 4 in this instance is formed by 6o
a piece of metal bent longitudinally upon it-
self to present a recess in which the ends of
the ribs are to be housed and is then bent
into circular form, as shown in Fig. 1, the ends
of the ribs being held between the members 65
of the band by having the band beaded around
them, as shown in Fig. 3,or by the employment
of solder or by beading and soldering, the ob-
ject of the beads being to prevent lateral shift-
ing of the ends when once seated between the 70
members of the band. By this manner of as-
sembling the ribs with the band a firm and sta-
ble union between the parts will be effected,
and as this mode of procedure is one commonly
employed for assembling metallic parts to- 75
gether, it will be understood that by thus
securing the ribs in position there will be no
added cost to the device.
Each center band 5 comprises two strips of
metal 6 and 7, as shown in Fig. 2, the strip 6 8o
constituting the inner side of the band and
the strip 7 the outer side. The strip 6 is pro-
vided with transverse flutes or beads 8, in
which the members of the ribs are designed
to work, the strip 7 serving to hold the rib 85
members in the guides, so that when the two
sections are assembled to present a band the
structure resulting will constitute a combined
rib guide and retainer. In assembling the
parts of the center band the ribbed or fluted 90
strip is secured to the strip 7 by any suitable
means, as .by soldering or by riveting or in
any other manner. The rib members are
then passed through pairs of the guides in
alternate order-that is to say, the free ends 95
of one rib-section pointing toward one end of
the structure and the ends of the next rib-
section pointing in the opposite direction,STATES
