BENJAMIN L. POOL, OF BEN WHEELER, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO
CLAUD L. STANFORD, OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,388, dated October 24, 1899.
Application filed July 28, 1899. Serial No. 725,411. (No modelsTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN L. POOL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Ben
Wheeler, in the county of Van Zandt and
5 State of Texas, have invented a new and use-
ful Plow Attachment, of which the following
is a specification.
This invention relates to plow attachments,
and the intention and purpose of the same is
ro to provide means for applying to an ordinary
turning-plow a convenient form of device for
supporting sweeps, scrapers, or analogous im-
plements without changing the particular ar-
rangement of the plow or detracting from its
15 usefulness, and thereby making it possible
to carry on the ordinary plow operation and
adding thereto the beneficial influences or ad-
vantages of the conjoint addition of sweeps
or other similar implements.
to The invention essentially consists of a rail
adapted to be applied to the interior of the
landside of an ordinary turning-plow or to
constitute or serve as a lower rail for the
landside itself and having projected later-
25 ally from the rear portion a neck with an up-
standing rearwardly - oblique foot provided
with an elongated slot to receive a fasten-
ing-bolt employed to secure sweeps, wings,
scrapers, or other analogous implements in
Jo adjustable position on the said foot and in
rear of the moldboard and other portions of
an ordinary turning-plow.
The invention further consists of the de-
tails of construction and arrangement of parts
35 which will be more fully hereinafter described
and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is
a perspective view of an ordinary turning-
plow, showing the improved attachment ap-
4o plied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view
of a part of a plow and the attachment. Fig.
3 is a detail perspective view of the attach-
ment. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the
line x x, Fig. 1.
45 Similar numerals of reference are employed
to indicate corresponding parts in the several
views.
The numerals designates an ordinary turn-
ing-plow having a moldboard 2 and a land-
50 side 3. The rail or securing-arm 4 of the im-
proved attachment is adapted to be bolted toand has its lower edge preferably located in a
plane coincident with that of the lower edge of
said landside. The number of bolts and bolt-
openings that are necessary to secure a land- 55
side in position vary in different plows, and
it is intended to be understood that the rail
or arm 4 will be supplied with the number
of bolt-openings necessary to adapt it for se-
curemnent to any kind of plow commercially 6o
known and having features of construction
to render the improved attachment appli-
cable thereto. From the rear termination of
the rail or bar 4 and projected laterally inward
is a neck 5, which connects the said rail or 65
bar with the lower portion of an upstanding
foot 6, having a rearward oblique arrange-
ment and supplied with an elongated slot 7,
extending entirely therethrough to the rear
side. The neck 5 is thickened or made heavy 70
to resist strain or breakage incident to the
drag of the implements that may be applied
to the foot, and the slot 7 is preferably of rec-
tangular form to receive a bolt 8, having a
square body 9 and a lower reduced screw- 75
threaded end 10 for the reception of a clamp-
ing-nut. By the use of the bolt having a
square body only one fastening device is nec-
essary to firmly connect the attachments to
the foot 6, and thus save time and labor in 8o
substituting different implements, as the soil
treated may require. By making the slot 7
elongated the wings, scrapers, sweeps, or
other implements that are applied to the foot
can be adjusted to adapt them to deep or 85
shallow culture, and it is intended that the
rail or arm 4 be removable, so that it can be
quickly detached when its use is not desired.
In the drawings one form of sweep11is shown,
and this [may be varied, and other devices 90
may replace the same. Heretofore it has been
customary to apply these sweeps, scrapers,
and other implements to straight plow-stocks,
and the accomplishment of this mode of at-
taching such implements is attended with 95
very many inconveniences and annoyances.
By the mode of applying the attachment, as
heretofore set forth, through the medium of
a rail or bar carrying the foot very many ad-
vantages are gained, and particularly the re- ioo
duction of draft power and attendance ordi-
narily required to make these devices success-
