UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
MATTIE L. SHERMAN, OF LORN, TEXAS.
URINAL.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Application filed April 19, 1909. Serial No. 490,821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTIE L. SHERMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Lohn, in the county of McCulloch, State of
5 Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Urinals; and I do hereby
declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as
will enable others skilled in the art to which
10 it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to surgical appli-
ances and has an especial reference to a
urinal adapted to be constantly worn by
women suffering from incontinence of urine.
15 One object of the invention is to improve
the general construction of devices of this
character.
Another object of the invention is to im-
prove the suspending means used with de-
20 vices of this character.
With the above and other objects in view
as will be hereinafter apparent, the inven-
tion consists in general of a novel form of
conducting pipe held in position in an in-
25 proved manner.
The invention further consists in certain
novel details of construction and combina-
tions of parts hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings
30 and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, like char-
acters of reference indicate like parts in the
several views, and;-Figure 1 is a side ele-
vation of a urinal constructed in accordance
35 with this invention. Fig. 2 is a front ele-
vation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
The numeral 10 indicates the body or
lower part of the tube and this is provided
at its lower end with a small nozzle 11 of
40 any preferred construction. Adjacent the
lower end at the point where the tube passes
the ankle of the wearer there is provided a
band 12 which is attached centrally to the
tube and has one end provided with the
45 usual buckle and the other with a plurality
of spaced perforations to enable it to be ad-
justed to fit persons of different sizes.
The upper part of the tube is expanded as
at 13 to form a pocket which is surrounded
50 by an outwardly extending flange 14. This
part of the tube as well as the body is con-
structed of soft rubber. Surrounding the
mouth of the pocket 13 is a ring of stiff but
flexible wire 13' which serves to hold the
55 mouth of the pocket open and which may be
bent to cause the structure to properly coverthe entire mouth of the vagina. The flange
surrounding the mouth is preferably of sub-
stantially rectangular shape and is of suf-
ficient size to extend up over the front of the 60
wearer's abdomen as well as back over the
buttocks so that none of the voided urine is
allowed to soil the user's clothes.
In order to secure the device to the body
there is provided a waist belt 15 to one end 65
of which is attached a depending piece 16
having its upper free corner provided with a
buckle 17. The other end of the waist belt
is provided with the usual set of spaced per-
forations 18. This depending piece is sub- 70
stantially square in form and from its lower
margin depends a central strap 19 and cor-
ner straps 20. The central strap 19 is con-
nected to a ring 21 which is formed on the
ring 13' and this strap is preferably pro- 75
vided with an adjusting buckle 22. The
corner straps are connected to buckles 23 at-
tached to the corners of the front part of the
flange 14 and may also be adjusted for
length. 80
A pinning strip 24 is provided for the at-
tachment and support of the rear part of the
flange 14 and this strip is provided with a
centrally disposed strap 25 and corner straps
26, the strap 25 being connected to a ring 27 85
formed on the ring 13' and the corner straps
being attached to the corners of the rear part
of the flange 14.
All of the straps are preferably made of
elastic but it will be noted that only the 90
front straps are adjustable as the pinning
strip provides for the adjustment at the rear.
In using this device the straps are prop-
erly adjusted as to length and the wire bent
so that the mouth of the pocket will fit the 95
abdomen. The belt is then buckled around
the waist and the pinning strip brought up
back of the waist and attached to the belt.
The ankle strap is then adjusted about the
ankle and the urinal is ready for use. 100
There has thus been provided a simple
and efficient device of the character de-
scribed and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that many minor changes
may be made in the form and proportions of 105
this invention without departing from the
material principles thereof. It is not there-
fore desired to confine the invention to the
exact form herein shown and described, but
it is wished to include all such as properly 110
come within the scope of the appended
claim.940,077.
