UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
SUSAN M. KING, OF BURNET, TEXAS.
COOLER.No. 909,806.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SUSAN M. KING, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Bar-
net, in the county of Burnet and State of}
& Texas, have invented certain new and useful
Improvements in Coolers, of which the fol-
lowing is a specification, reference being had
to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in
10 coolers; and an object of my invention is to
provide a cooler which will be simple in
construction, cheap in manufacture and most
efficient in operation.
In the drawings illustrating the principle
15 of my invention and the best mode now
known to me of applying that principle,
Figure 1 is a central vertical section showing
the cooler in place upon a jar; and Fig. 2
is a perspective view of my new cooler.
20 From the bottom a of the cooler rises a
cylindrical wall b, the latter and the bottom
a forming a dish-like receptacle for water.
In the center of the bottom a is mounted a
ventilating flue or pipe c, the lower end of
25 which is open and the upper end of which
is covered with a piece of wire gauze ci.
The bottom a extends out beyond the wall
b to form a flange e; and to the bottom a
on its lower face are secured legs f. The
30 latter are each provided with a shoulder g.
In use the cooler is placed upon the top of
the jar h containing the liquid, as milk or
cream, to be kept cool. The shoulder g
of each leg f rests upon the rim i of the jar
35 h, whereby an open space j is left between
the bottom a and the top of the jar I.
Through this open space j flows a current of
air which passes up through the central ven-
tilating flue c. A piece of porous cloth k is
40 wrapped arond the jar It and its upper edge
dips into the water held by the wall b and
bottom a. The air circulating through the
open space j and the pipe c increases thePatented Jan. 12, 1909.
evaporation of the water held by the porous
cloth 1. 45
I claim:
1. A cooling device consisting of a dish-
like receptacle made up of a wall and a bot-
tom, the latter being fitted with a ventilating
pipe open at its ends and having legs, each 50
of which is bent to form a shoulder and
has an end portion extending downwardly
from said shoulder, the latter being adapted
to rest upon the rim of the jar containing
the liquid to be cooled and said end portions 55
being adapted to engage the wall of the
jar, whereby an interval is left between the
bottom of the receptacle and the rim of the
jar for the passage of air through said ven-
tilating pipe. 60
2. A cooling device consisting of a dish-
like receptacle made up of a wall and a
bottom which extends outwardly beyond
said wall to form a flange and which is fitted
with a ventilating pipe open at its ends; 65
said bottom being further fitted with legs,
each of which is bent inwardly to form a
shoulder and has an end portion extending
downwardly from said shoulder, the lat-
ter being adapted to rest upon the rim of 70
the jar containing the liquid to be cooled
and said end portions being adapted to enter
said jar and engage the wall thereof, where-
by an interval is left between the bottom
of the receptacle and the rim of the jar for 75
the passage of air through said ventilating
pipe.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set
my hand this twenty sixth day of February,
1908, at said Burnet in the presence of the 80
two undersigned witnesses.
SUSAN M. KING.
