lever 26. By this means I am enabled not
merely to produce the requisite air-pressure
in the tank 20 for forcing the oil contained
in the latter up into the burner, but the air
5 introduced through the pipe 22 is caused to
churn and thoroughly agitate the oil, becom-
ing commingled therewith and facilitating its
conversion into a gaseous vapor which is bet-
ter fitted for consumption than when unmixed
io with atmospheric air.
The filling-pipe 21 of the tank 20 is provided
at its upper end with an elbow 27, to which
by means of a swiveled or union joint 27" is
connected a filling cup or funnel 28. The lat-
15 ter when not in use for filling the tank may
be turned down to the reversed position shown
in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when it will be seen
that it forms a protection for the inlet of the
filling-pipe, water, dirt, &c., being absolutely
20 prevented from entering the same.
In addition to the filling-pipe 21 the stor-
age - tank is provided with a small pipe 29,
having a petcock 30, by opening which the
air contained in the tank may be permitted
25 to escape when the tank is being filled. By
opening either this petcock or the valve of
the filling-pipe the compressed air may at any
time be permitted to escape from the storage-
tank when it shall be desired to withdraw the
30 oil-supply from the stove-for instance, in
case of fire.
The pipe 23, connecting the storage-tank
with the air-pump, is provided with a check-
valve 31 to prevent the oil from backing up.
35 This is very essential, owing to the arrange-
ment of the mouth of said air-pipe below the
level of the oil in the storage-tank.
The operation of my invention will be read-
ily understood. By operating the air-pump
40 until a suitable pressure has been produced
in the storage-tank the oil is caused to flow
into the supply-pipe. By opening the valve
18 a small quantity of oil is permitted to flow
into the igniting-tank 15. Being ignited, it
45 heats the generator-pipes until the oil, per-
mitted to pass into the latter by opening the
valve 1 of the supply-pipe, is converted into
gaseous vapor, which on entering the burner-
pipes and escaping through the burners isignited. The flames deflected by the burners 5o
upon the generator-pipes will heat the latter
sufficiently to cause the conversion of oil into
vapor to proceed uninterruptedly as long as
the valve 1 remains open and sufficient air-
pressure exists in the storage-tank. 55
Having thus described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent
of the United States
1. A hydrocarbon-burner comprising a gen-
erator - pipe connected with and extending 6o
downwardly and forwardly from the supply-
pipe, a short connecting - pipe, horizontally
disposed and extending laterally from the
outer lower end of said generator-pipe, a sec-
ond generator - pipe extending downwardly 65
and rearwardly from the said connecting-
pipe, a vertical connecting-pipe extending up-
wardly from the inner lower end of the sec-
ond generator- pipe and a pair of parallel,
horizontally-disposed burner-pipes connected 70
at their outer ends by a short connecting-
pipe, one of said burner-pipes being connect-
ed at its inner end with the upper end of the
vertical connecting-pipe and the other burner-
pipe being closed at its inner end, said 75
burner-pipes being disposed in the same ver-
tical planes as the generator-pipes, said gen-
erator-pipes being tilted from their connected
ends, respectively in an upward and a down-
ward direction, being thus disposed at un- 8o
equal distances from the respective burner-
pipes and the latter being provided with flame-
openings in their under sides, through which
flames will be projected in the direction of the
generator-pipes. 85
2. The combination with a storage-tank
buried under ground and having a valved in-
let-pipe provided with an elbow at its upper
end, of a filling cup or funnel swiveled to said
elbow to exclude dirt when turned in a down- 90
ward direction.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in
the presence of two witnesses.
