UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HICKMAN ENGLEMAN, OF EMORY, TEXAS.
CRANK FOR DRILLING-MACHINES.No. 838,700.
To all whom ib if amay concerns:
Be it known that I, JOHN HICKMAN ENGLE-
MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing
at Em ory, in the county of Rains and State of
5 Texas, have invented a new and useful Crank
for Drilling-Machines, of which the follow-
ing is a specification.
This invention relates to cranks for drill-
ing-machines.
io The object of the invention is to provide
novel means whereby the drill may impart
full free force of its blow, the lifting of the
drill may be effected in a rapid manner and
with the least possible wear upon the drill-
15 rope, and the stroke of the drill may be va-
ried whenever found necessary or desirable.
With the above and other objects in view
the invention consists of certain novel fea-
tures of construction and combinations of
20 parts, which will be hereinafter more fully de-
scribed, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is. shown
the preferred form of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a
25 portion of a drilling-machine, showing my
improved crank used in connection there-
with; and Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of
the crank on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the figures by characters of
30 reference, A is a well- drilling machine of any
preferred form and embodying in its con-
struction shaft-sections 17, disposed in aline-
ment and spaced apart at their inner ends.
Arranged upon these shaft-sections is a
35 crank 18, comprising a pair of sleeves 19,
which are suitably secured to the shaft-sec-
tions. Each sleeve is provided with a lon-
gitudinally-channeled arm 20, which extends
at right angles therefrom and is providedPatented Dec. 18, 1906.
with a longitudinal slot 21. Disposed within 40
the channels of the arms are the members 22
of a yoke, the bend or crest 23 of which car-
ries a grooved sheave 24. The members 22
of the yoke carry bolts 26, which project
through the slots 21 and carry nuts 27 on 45
their outer ends, by which they may be
clamped at any desired adjustment. It will
therefore be seen that by loosening the nuts
27 the yoke members 22 may be moved to
and from the shaft portions, and thus -o
lengthen or shorten the throw of the crank,
as may be desired. By providing a crank of
this character the drill-rope of a drilling-ma-
chine may be placed upon the sheave and the
stroke of the drill will be regulated according 55
to the length to which the crank is adjusted.
I claim-
1. A crank for drilling-machines compris-
ing a pair of longitudinally-channeled arms,
sleeves carried by said arms, a two-part shaft 6o
secured in the sleeves, and a yoke adjustably
mounted in the channels of the arms.
2. A crank for drilling-machines compris-
ing a two-part shaft, oppositely- disposed
alining sleeves mounted on the adjoining 65
ends of the shaft, longitudinally channeled
and slotted arms extending from the sleeves,
a yoke slidably mounted within the channels,
means within the slots for securing the yoke
in adjusted position, and a shaft carried by 70
the yoke.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as
my own I have hereto affixed my signature
in the presence of two witnesses.
