UNITED STATESPATENT OFFICE.
EPAPHRAS LEE BEAL, OF FREDERICKSBURG, TEXAS.
SHAFT AND PULLEY COLLAR.No. 853,214.
[to all whonm it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPAPHRAS LEE BEAL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at
Fredericksburg, in the county of Gillespie
5 and State of Texas, have invented certain
new and useful Improvements in Shaft and
Pulley Collars, of which the following is a
specification, reference being had therein to
the accompanying drawing.
[o This invention relates to collars for shafts
and pulleys having set-screws whereby they
may be secured in position upon a shaft; and
it has for its object to provide means for
shielding said set-screw from sustaining or
15 inflicting injury.
The invention consists in the improved
construction, arrangement and combination
of parts which will be hereinafter fully de-
scribed and particularly pointed out in the
20 claims.
In the drawing; Figure 1 is a side eleva-
tion of a collar constructed in accordance
with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan
view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
25 Corresponding parts in the several figures
are denoted by like characters of reference.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates a
collar for pulleys, shaftings and the like hav-
ing a radial recess 2 for the reception of the
30 head of a set-screw 3 which serves for secur-
ingr the collar upon a shaft. The rim of the
collar is provided adjacent to the radial re-
cess 2 with shallow depressions constitutingPatented May 14,1907.
a seat for a curved plate or shield 4 the outer
face of which is flush with the rim of the col- 35
lar. The shield or plate 4 is provided on its
under side with dovetailed ribs 5, 5 engaging
dovetailed grooves 6, 6 formed in the shallow
depressions constituting the seat which lat-
ter is designated 8. The depressions con- 40
stituting the seat do not extend entirely
across the rim or face of the pulley, the latter
being provided with a narrow stop-flange 7
forming a stop to limit the movement of the
shield 4 in one direction. The dovetailed 45
ribs 5 will, when in engagement with the
grooves 6, be held with a degree of friction
that will be sufficient to retain the shield 4
in position.
What is claimed is: 50
A collar having a radial recess accommo-
dating the head of a fastening screw and
provided adjacent to said recess with shal-
low depressions extending partly across the
rim of the, collar, the latter being provided 55
with a stop-flange, and said depressions hav-
ing dovetailed grooves, in combination with
a shield provided near the ends thereof with'
dovetailed ribs engagingthe grooves.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 60
signature in presence of two witnesses.
EPAPHRAS LEE BEAL.
