UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS MARION AWALT, OF CiILLICOTHE. rTEXA1 S.
PLOWSHARE.Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 3, 1908.
Application filed February 10, 1908. Serial No. 415,183.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. AWALT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at
Chillicothe, in the county of H-ardeian and
5 State of Texas, have invented certain new
and useful Improvements in Plowshares, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plowshares, and
more particularly to the point thereof, the
10 object being to provide a reinforced point
to reduce wear, and also a self-sharpening
point.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is
a front elevation showing the invention ap-
15 plied to the share of a shovel plow and Fig. 2
is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a trans-
verse section on the line 3-3, and Fig. 4 is a
transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5
20 denotes a plow shovel of the usual outline,
the lower side edges being sharpened as indi-
cated at 6 and tapering to a point. With
the exceptions hereinafter noted the shovel
does not differ from the ordinary ones.
25 The point of the shovel is reinforced by in-
creasing the thickness of the adjacent por-
tion of the blade. The sides 7 of the rein-
forcement coincide with the tapering side
edges of the blade and join at the point of the
30 blade to form a substantially vertical cutting
edge S. The upper surface of the reinforce-
ment immediately behind the upper end of
the cutting edge S is convex as indicated at 9
and said convex portion merges with the
35 main body-portion of the blade. The cross
section of the reinforcement immediately
adjacent the point is triangular as shown inFig. 3, the sides 7 of the reinforcement form-
ing the sides of the triangle and merging
with the outer portions of the convex sur- 40
face 9.
Reinforcing the point as herein described
gives it a greater amount of metal and en-
ables it to withstand greater wear. It can
also be tempered to any degree of hardness, 45
and the shape of the point makes it self-
sharpening.
In the drawings the invention is shown in
connection with the share of a shovel-plow
but it is to be understood that cultivator 50
points, lister shares, sweeps etc., may be
similarly constructed, and I do not wish to
be limited to the particular form of plow-
share illustrated. The amount of reinforce-
ment may be varied to suit the size of the 55
share.
I claim:
A plowshare having its lower side edges
tapered to a point, said point being rein-
forced by thickening it, the sides of the rein- 60
forcement coinciding with the tapering side
edges of the blade and meeting at the point
to form a substantially vertical cutting edge,
the upper surface of the reinforcement be-
hind the upper end of said cutting edge being 65
convex and merging with the main body-
portion of the share.
In testimony whereof I affix m.y signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS MARION AWALT.
