The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information
volunteer opportunities for young people.
SO PROUDLY YOU’LL HAIL when you volunteer to help make this year’s near-downtown “Freedom
Over Texas” celebration
• assisting with admissions or tending any of the many booths that make up the festival’s
infrastructure. In return for their time, volunteers will be treated to free admission, free parking,
world-class entertainment, commemorative tee shirts, exciting prize drawings, great refreshments,
and dazzling fireworks displays. The minimum age for volunteers is 16- but younger volunteer will
• be accepted if accompanied by an adult.
•
FIGHT HUNGER by becoming a volunteer at the Houston Food Bank, located a couple of miles north
of downtown Houston. This warehouse-style facility works with social service agencies to serve the
poor throughout greater Houston. Available volunteer assignments include sorting and sacking food
to be distributed to needy families, labeling food donations, or assisting with office work. Minimum
age various according to the assignment, but some jobs can be done by volunteers as young as 8. The
Food Bank is open for business on weekdays and Saturdays.
SALVAGE COMPUTER PARTS for an organization that rebuilds computers and channels them to
persons with disabilities. No special skills are required- staff will teach you all you need to know to
take apart obsolete computers to remove parts that can be used in assembling rebuilt machines. The
work is normally done on weekdays at the agency’s office near Hillcroft and Bissonnet, but Saturday
sessions can be scheduled for volunteer groups. This could be a great summer opportunity for
persons 12 and older to learn more about the inner workings of computers.
A BIG WORLD could use a little of your help as a volunteer for an organization that channels badly
needed medical supplies to impoverished countries all around the globe. You can support this
ongoing life-saving project by sorting and boxing these items at a warehouse near Westheimer and
Beltway 8. The work is simple and doesn’t require a great deal of physical strength. Shifts can be
scheduled on an occasional basis and can be arranged for weekdays (during the daytime or evening)
1 or on Saturdays. The minimum age for volunteers is normally 17, but persons as young as 12 are
I welcome if accompanied by an adult volunteer.
SUMMER DAY CAMP for special needs children and their siblings is in session during June and July at
a community center near River Oaks. Sponsored by an agency that engages these youngsters in
performing and visual arts, camp sessions will involve a wealth of activities such as drama, dance,
puppetry, and storytelling. Caring volunteers are important to the camp’s success, helping instructors
and attending to the needs of individual students. Persons as young as 15 years of age are invited to
volunteer.
FOR SELF-STARTERS: Take up a collection among your friends for items such as combs, soap,
deodorant, toothbrushes, and umbrellas to deliver to a local shelter for the homeless.
DID YOU KNOW that studies have shown that people who volunteer experience improvement in their
satisfaction with life, sense of well-being, and overall health?
For additional information on volunteer opportunities, please contact VOLUNTEER HOUSTON at
