Chocolate:
A Healthy Food?
You have probably heard that chocolate isn’t good
for you. But new studies show that’s not entirely
true!
At one time, people, including scientists, thought
that chocolate could cause acne and tooth decay
and had no nutrition. However, recent studies
have shown that chocolate does not cause acne or
make it worse. As for teeth problems, there is no
proof that chocolate causes cavities or tooth decay.
Instead, cocoa butter in chocolate can coat teeth
and help +keep plaque from forming.
Researchers in California also have found that
some chemicals in chocolate, phenolics, may even
help lower the risk of heart disease. But
it is not known whether those in chocolate do
actually help prevent heart disease.
With more than 300 chemicals, chocolate is
known for making people feel good. Caffeine,
working with other chemicals, provides a “lift.”
And some of the chemicals in chocolate cause
brain chemicals to work more in parts of your
brain that keep you alert.
Some findings concerning chocolate are
controversial. While research continues on
chocolate, it is important that you remember one
thing: Although chocolate isn’t all bad,
too much of any food can be.
