^ Kids In Action
’ The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information
* on volunteer opportunities for young people.
* BUNNIES, EGGS, AND FLOWERS are just some of the images you might use when you make
* Easter cards for an agency sponsoring visits to institutional shut-ins in connection with a
number of holidays throughout the year. The next visits on the schedule will take place March
22, the day before Easter. Having handmade greeting cards to share with the persons visited will
help make the occasion all the more special for everyone involved. You can make the cards at
home and deliver them at your convenience to the agency’s Galleria area office. No minimum
age is involved, and this can be a great project for individual volunteers, families, or organized
groups.
\
t SHARE YOUR HOBBY with a small group of adults with mental retardation at a group home in
northwest Houston. Whether your interest is sewing, cooking, scrapbooking, or a similar leisure
• pursuit, demonstrating your craft and chatting with the residents about it can help broaden their
_ personal interests and nurture their socialization skills. Visits can be scheduled for evening or
weekends, on a one-time or occasional basis. The minimum age for volunteers is 12.
TURN A NEW PAGE as a volunteer helping with preparations for the Houston Public Library’s
• annual bargain book sale. With this mammoth sale coming up in May, volunteers will be needed
^ on Saturdays between now and then to sort and box the massive quantities of books that will be
involved. Three-hour volunteer shifts will be available at a warehouse near Single and Little
• York. The minimum age for volunteers is 15.
® THE FORECAST IS BRIGHT when you volunteer at the Weather Museum, the newest addition to
^ Houston’s burgeoning Museum District. The only museum in the nation devoted to the study of
_ weather, this Hermann Park area institution features gadgets, displays, and interactive exhibits
® bound to fascinate young and old alike. Volunteers can serve as tour guides, staff the front desk,
A or assist in the gift shop. Three-hour shifts are available Tuesdays through Sundays during
^ daytime hours. Assignments are available for persons 16 or older.
CREATE BLANKETS for infants and small children. An all-volunteer organization called Project
Linus is looking for persons willing to create blankets for kids in distressed situations,
particularly pediatric cancer patients. The blankets may be sewn, woven, crocheted, knitted, or
quilted, and size doesn’t matter. You can do the work at home and on your own schedule, and
■ there’s no minimum age requirement.

FOR SELF-STARTERS: Do you play a musical instrument? Then think about playing it at a nursing
home in your area. The old folks there would love the entertainment!
DID YOU KNOW that now is the time to start researching summer volunteer jobs for youth? By
the first of May, most of the slots for these jobs will already be filled.
