® Kids In Action
The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information
on volunteer opportunities for young people.
COMB THE BEACH as a volunteer at the annual “Texas Adopt-a-Beach Fall Cleanup”, slated for
Saturday, September 26 all along the Texas Gulf Coast. Teaming up with other volunteer “beach
buddies”, you can help remove debris that spoils the appearance of our shoreline and poses
hazards to marine wildlife. (Some of the debris will be recycled to fund other environmental
improvement projects.) Call now to reserve a place for yourself on the beach of your choice. There
is no minimum age if accompanied by an adult; otherwise the minimum age is 15.
SERVE WITH RELISH as a kitchen volunteer for an agency that holds support group meetings for 1
children who have suffered the loss of loved ones. Kitchen volunteers welcome the children’s
• families as they arrive between 6 p.m. and 6:30 pm on selected weekday evenings at the agency’s
t homey facility near the Astrodome. The volunteers help set up a buffet style potluck dinner,
prepare drinks, and generally oversee this time in the evening. Following dinner, they are asked to
• prepare leftover food for the families to take home, and they help clean up the kitchen. The
0 minimum age for kitchen volunteers is 14.
• BREAK NEW GROUND by helping tend a community garden that is used to produce vegetables for
organizations serving the needy. The sponsoring agency will teach you all you need to know to
• seed, weed, and feed a garden successfully. Your commitment can be short-term or ongoing and
O the hours are very flexible. There are community garden sites throughout Houston from which to
choose. Minimum age: none, if able to do the work needed.
^ MELLOW MELODIES can brighten the spirits of residents of a nursing home near the Astrodome
• when you use your musical skills to entertain them. If you are skilled in playing the piano, guitar,
• or any other instrument that readily lends itself to solo performances, consider dropping by on
^ occasional basis to cheer and charm residents with your musical skills. Sessions can be arranged
® for almost any evening, on weekdays or weekends. As long as you can provide good musical
0 entertainment, there’s really no minimal age requirement involved.
8 CAT LOVERS are invited to participate in the pet adoption process for an all-volunteer animal
A welfare organization. On Saturdays or Sundays you’ll staff an adoption station at a local pet
A supply store, helping visitors select pets and completing the necessary paperwork. There are
■ several locations from which to choose. Your time commitment can involve just one or more shifts
■ per month. Minimum age for volunteers: 13 if accompanied by an adult, 16 otherwise.

FOR SELF-STARTERS: Sew simple stuffed animals for children in families that have lost their
homes through fire or natural disaster. You can do the work at home and at your own pace.
DID YOU KNOW that an organization in Washington, D.C., named Independent Sector, does a
national survey every two years to identify trends in volunteering and charitable donations? Key
results of their most recent study are always posted on their Web site: www.independentsector.org
For additional information on volunteer opportunities, please contact VOLUNTEER HOUSTON at
