SKids In Action
The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the folic
information on volunteer opportunities for young people.
A BIG WORLD could use a little of your help as a volunteer for an organization that channels
badly needed medical supplies to impoverished countries all around the globe. You
support this ongoing life-saving project by sorting and boxing these items at a warehouse
near Westheimer and Beltway 8. The work is simple and doesn’t require a great deal of l
physical strength. Shifts can be scheduled on an occasional basis and can be arranged for
• weekdays (during the daytime or evening) or on Saturdays. The minimum age for
volunteers is normally 17, but persons as young as 12 are welcome if accompanied by an
adult volunteer.
• REALLY DIG IN as a volunteer at a community garden used to produce vegetables for
• organizations serving the needy. The sponsoring agency will teach you all you need to know
^ to seed, weed, and feed a garden successfully. Your commitment can be short-term or
ongoing and the hours are very flexible. There are community garden sites throughout
• Houston from which to choose. Minimum age: none, if able to do the work needed.
• TEENS HELP TEENS through a crisis hotline operated by a United Way agency. Between 5
0 p.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays and weekends, teenagers staffing this hotline handle calls on
subjects as varied as substance abuse, school problems, and suicide. Extensive training is
• conducted by social work professionals. If you are a good listener between the ages of 15
^ and 19, think about taking on a weekly phone shift at an office in central Houston.
A TURN UP THE VOLUMES as a volunteer helping with preparations for the Houston Public
Library’s annual bargain book sale. With this mammoth sale coming up in mid-April,
volunteers will be needed on Saturdays between now and then to sort and box the massive
quantities of books that will be involved. Three-hour volunteer shifts will be available at a
warehouse near Bingle and Little York. The minimum age for volunteers is 15.
CAT LOVERS are invited to participate in the pet adoption process for an all-volunteer
animal welfare organization. On Saturdays or Sundays you’ll staff an adoption station at a
local pet supply store, helping visitors select pets and completing the necessary paperwork.
There are several locations from which to choose. Your time commitment can involve just
one or more shifts per month. Minimum age for volunteers: 13 if accompanied by an adult,
16 otherwise.
FOR SELF-STARTERS: Organize a garage sale, with proceeds to be donated to your favorite
charity.
DID YOU KNOW that the Points of Light Foundation in Washington, D.C. honors a different
volunteer each day with its Daily Point of Light Award? Check out this page on their Web site,
