distributes $118,885.57
Trustees of The Malouf and
Iris Abraham 1982 Charitable
Lead Trust announced disburs-
ment of $118,885,57 in gifts to nine
non-profit organizations this
week. Betty Cooper, Malouf Abra-
ham, Jr., Bill Ed Abraham, and
Jay Godwin met on December 4 to
review requests for 1997 distribu-
tions.

to be a most enjoyable experience
working with the other trustees
and to be able to provide funds to
a variety of worthy projects.”
“These projects provide an im-
mediate benefit to us,” he contin-
ued. “The result will be enjoyed
for generations to come.”
The largest contribution was
awarded to the First Presbyterian
Church 50th Anniversary Build-
ing Fund in the amount of
$42,385.57.
“We are very grateful,” said
Brad Walker, First Presbyterian
minister. “The church is badly in
need of more space and this
money will certainly get us
started. We wTere not expecting
this donation and are very ex-
cited.”
Walker said the church will do-
nate 10% of the funds to mission
wTork.
The Trust awarded the Cana-
dian River Wagon Bridge Reno-
vation Project $20,000. Crested
Butte Land Trust, a preservation
group in Colorado, will receive
$10,000. The funds will be used to
purchase and preserve land in the
Crested Butte area.
The Presbyterian Foundation
was awarded $10,000, w'hich will
be used in a community-wide pro-
ject to preserve and renovate the
Presbyterian Building in Mem-
phis, Texas.
The trust donated $10,000 each
to the Canadian Area YMCA and
the Edward Abraham Memorial
Home. Wayland Baptist Univer-
sity received $6,500 to be used for
the Malouf Abraham Family Art
Center.
The River Valley Pioneer Mu-
seum and Rachel’s Little House
were each awarded $5,000.
The Charitable Lead Trust
was first established in 1982 by
Malouf and Iris Abraham. The
Abrahams, who had contributed
several hundred thousand dollars
to Canadian and Canadian-area
service projects, announced in
November of that year the crea-
tion of the $1.5 million dollar fund.
Over the twrenty-year life of the
fund it is expected to channel more
than $2.5 million in grants to rec-
ognized charities and service or-
ganizations.

United Way Drawing
As an additional fundraiser, the United Way of Hemphill County
will be offering chances on a large motorized K’Nex set. The toy
has a retail value of about $500 and was donated by the Canadian
Alco store. Chances are 50 cents each or three for $1 and may be
purchased at the First National Bank of Canadian.

Filing for March primaries underway
Filing began yesterday (Wednesday) for candidates in the March
10th primaries. The deadline for filing as a candidate for county, district
and state-wide offices is January' 2,1998. Petitions in lieu of filing fees
and applications for a place on the ballot can be requested from Repub-
lican County Chair Richard Podzemny at 323-8393 (office) or 323-5784
(home), or from Democratic Chair Bret Begert at 375-2346. #49
Public hearing on street closing
The City of Canadian will conduct a public hearing on Monday,
December 15th to allow interested citizens to voice their views on the
closing and abandonment of a portion of street easement between
Blocks 6 and 7 of Riverview Addition. The hearing will he held in Council
Chambers of City Hall at 5:30 p.m. #49
Immunization Clinic
An immunization clinic offering vaccines that give protection against
several childhood diseases will be from lla.m.-12 p.m. and from 1-4 p.m.
on December 15 at (ity Hall. The amount of money charged will be
based on family income and size, and the ability to pay. #49
Commodity Distribution
Food distribution to qualifying families of Hemphill County will be
1 hursday, December 18 at Hemphill County Exhibition Center from 10
a.m. until 12 30 p.m. Among items to be given this month are canned
Iruits, canned vegetables, pastries, breads, eggs, dry cereals, rice and
other packaged foods. Volunteer workers are needed to help box the
items for distribution. Work begins at 8 a.m., according to Wayne Baker,
Agency Director. #50
