gift just :r nme for cockie-baking da,- — my -own set o€ cookie-nuking
utensils. The child-sized pans, cutters roOimg pm and other
accessories remain in my mind s eye as the highlight o€ that
particular Christmas.
No doubt my mother ch :*se ocher day s to do some of her Chnstmas
food nreparanocs. for :: cannot have teen easy tc shepherd three
small daughters ato*, t the busyness of a da - s cookie-baking And the
results could not have been all that great. I realize in retrospect But
the memory of those holiday baking .days is sweet and prompted me
to plan similar da,, s for my v»n family when ocr children - ere small
Herewith are some recipes tried and true based -on one vanilla
reded cookie recipe but -ith several -anatiorts I hope some of my
readers -ill be prompted to spend a da.- in the kitchen with their
children during the Chnstmas holiday s, to provide them with not only
Chnstmas gtoc.es. but also Christmas memories

V anllLa Rolled Cookies
3 Vi cups flour 1 Vi cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder 2 eggs, well beaten
Vi teaspoon salt 1 Vj teaspoons vanilla
1 cup shortening
Sift flour, measure, add baking powder and salt, sift again.
Cream shortening, add sugar gradually and continue to heat until
light. Add well-beaten eggs and blend thoroughly: add vanilla.
Combine the dry ingredients and the creamed mixture: biend
thoroughly; chill
Roil as thin as possible on a lightly floured board may be roiled out
in halves rather than all at once . Cut with plain or fancy cookie
cutters Bake on greased cookie sheets.
Or form into small balls and place on greased cookie sheet: flatten
with bottom of glass tumbler which has been lightly greased, then
dipped ir. sugar: or w :th palm of the hand, floured, or with the tines of
a silver fork, pressing the balls down twice with the markings at right
angles.
Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon and sugar, red or green sprinkles,
decore ties, chopped nuts or coconut.
Bake in a hot tv er. -*00' i 6 to 10 minutes. Makes about 6 dozer, thin
cookies.

Variations
Spice Rolled Cookies: Sift 1 teaspoon cinnamon. • : teaspoon
allspice. • * teaspoon cloves and Vj teaspoon ginger with dry
ingredients.
Sugar Cookies: R the dough * inch thick Cut in shapes such as
animals or flowers, sprinkle with granulated sugar or coarsely cut
colored sugar
Christmas Stellas: Roll the dough « inch thick Cut into stars and
crescents. Garnish with bits of candied cherries and angelica or
sprinkle with colored sugar.

Tonia McLanahan engaged
to marry Rick Schluep
Toma McLanahan of Frakes. Kentucky and Rick Schluep of
Greenfield. Ohio, announce their plans to be married on Saturday.
March 25. in Frakes.
The couple will be married at 11 o'clock in the morning at Hope
United Methodist Church.
Tor.ia. the daughter of Billy Wayne and Lacreta McLanahan of
Canadian, is a 1986 graduate of Texas Wesleyan College in Fort
Worth She is presently employed as promotional assistant at
Henderson Settlement in Frakes.
Rick, the son of Jack and Mary Schluep of Hilliard. Ohio, is a 1982
graduate of Ohio University a: Athens. Ohio. He is employed as the
managing editor of the Greenfield Daily Times.
Moravian Christmas Cookies: Substitute 1 cup of powdered sugar
for the granulated sugar. Substitute 4 egg yolks for the whole eggs;
add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or evaporated milk. Roll ‘/« inch
thick and cut with star-shaped floured cutter. After baking, when
cooled frost w ith confectioner's frosting (see recipe below) to which 1
egg yolk has been added, and a little more confectioners sugar if
necessary.. Sprinkle at once, while frosting is moist, with chopped,
blanched and toasted almonds.
Confectioners’ Frosting
2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
2 tablespoons (about) hot water or milk
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond flavoring

The 4-H monthly letter was
discussed.
County Agent Dan Cornett
discussed livestock projects, the
shooting project and the electri-
cal project. He and Tanya
Morris distributed beef raffle
tickets.
The next meeting will be
January 16 at 2:45 at Canadian
Elementary School. Jace Show
is to bring drinks. Rebekka
Taylor cookies or snacks and
Bryan Johnston cups and nap-
kins.

have Christmas
on Monday
The Town and Country Ex-
tension Homemakers held a
Christmas party Monday mor-
ning at the First Methodist
Church.
Danna Hinders was the host-
ess. Members brought crafts
and food to share and exchange.
Shari Davenport was the pre-
siding officer. Others present
were Caroline Cornett. Gayle
Johnson, Shannon Meadows
and Terri McCormick.
The next meeting w ill be
January 10 at 9:30 in the
morning at the Methodist
Church. A baby-sitter is provid-
ed.
To confectioners' sugar add hot water or milk gradually until the
frosting has a good spreading consistency.
Christmas Kringles: Increase sugar to 1 \ cups and baking pow der
to 3 teaspoons. Add ‘i cup brandy or brandy flavoring, Vj cup of
finely blanched almonds and 2 teaspoons of caraway seeds to the
shortening, sugar and egg mixture. Roll the dough 1/8 inch thick. Cut
in small diamonds or rectangles. Bake in moderate oven (375°) 5 to 8
minutes.
Pinwbeel Rolled Cookies: Divide the dough into two parts
flavoring one with 2 squares (2 oz.) unsweetened chocolate, melted
and cooled; leaving the other plain. Roll each as thin as possible,
place one sheet on top of the other, then roll up w ith the hands as for
jelly roll. Chill, slice and bake as directed.
