New GI bill will fill colleges again
Veterans Administration and
education officials expect more
than half a million veterans to
enter college during the next
few years under new laws that
provide ‘‘GI Bill style” educa-
tion benefits to those who joined
the armed forces since 1985 and
extend them, for the first time,
to members of the national
guard and reserve force.
The American Council on
Education reports that the num-
ber of people using “new” GI
Bill benefits to go to school will
double from 150,000 to more
than 300,000 by 1993. The
council’s report, ‘‘Joining Forc-
es: The Military’s Impact on
College,” predicts that these
new GI Bill students will be a
significant source of enrollment
for many schools, particularly
public institutions, facing a
dwindling student pool.
Under the Montgomery GI
Bill, named for its sponsor, U.S,
Rep. G.V. “Sonny” Montgom-
ery, active duty military person-
nel, covered by Chapter 30 of
the law, are entitled to top basic
education benefits of $300 per

pageant Dec. 16-18
The Amarillo Little Theatre is
presenting “The Best Christ-
mas Pageant Ever” on
December lb-18 at the Theatre
Center, located at 2018 Civic
Circle.
Evening performances begin
at 7:30 p.m. on the 16th and
17th, and there will be 2:30 p.m.
matinees on the 17th and 18th.
The show is sponsored, in
part, by the Don and Sybil
Harrington Foundation.
The hilarious script, written
by Barbara Robinson, concerns
the efforts of a woman and her
husband to put on the annual
Christmas pageant despite hav-
ing to cast the Herdman kids,
probably the meanest, nastiest,
most inventively awful kids in
the world.
As the play opens, Beth,
played by Marnie Dodson, in-
troduces the key characters, the
six Herdman children including
Ralph, played by Brian Smith,
lmogene, played by Sarah Sha-
vo, Leroy, played by Todd Kitts,
Claude, played by Todd Friat,
Ollie, played by Todd Temple-
ton, and Gladys, played by Arin
Palmer. Beth's mother and fa-
ther, portrayed by Chris Hunts-
man and Greg Dunlap, have the
dubious honor of organizing the
annual Christmas pageant.
Other cast members include
Lisa Freeman, Saralyn Moore,
Chris Motes, Mollie Loyd. Mar-
ilyn Williams, Debbie Nolan,
Jordan Waldrop, John Apple-
berry, Michael Radner, Cristi
Carter, Shane Williams, Jeremy
Parkhurst, Meridith Montgom-
ery, Kelsey Scroggins, and Ni-

Tim Gabriel, Michael Merri-

Shelly Marmaduke, ALT Ex-
ecutive Director, discussed the
addition of the childrens play to
the Theatre’s Season. “The
Best Christmas Pageant Ever”
is a part of the Theatre’s Out-
reach Projects, designed to in-
volve more children in our
community in the theatre arts.
Over 200 children auditioned for
this portion, which tells us that
we are on the right track. We
feel that it is our responsibility,
as a community theatre, to
provide these types of oppor-
tunities for the young people in
Amarillo.”

month for 36 months in ex-
change for three years of service
and a pay reduction of $100 a
month for 12 months.
Benefits for reserve force
members, covered by Chapter
106 of the law, are $140 per
month for 36 months, contin-
gent upon a six-year enlistment.
Reservists can begin using their
benefits during their service
period.
The Waco VA Regional Office
reports that 12,292 of Texas
reserve and guard members are
using the Chapter 106 program
and that 408 veterans are en-
rolled in Texas colleges and
universities under the Chapter
30 program.
“We are seeing a lot of
interest in the new benefits for
reservists,” said Dr. Stephen L.
Lemons, Director. It is bringing
a whole new group and genera-
tion of veterans into the VA
education program. They can
stay at home and serve in the
reserves while pursuing their
education with VA help.
