County Commissioner Leon-
ard Powledge, Democrat, won a
tie-breaker election Tuesday to
hold onto his Precinct 3 seat by a
comfortable 42-vote margin over
his Republican challenger Pat
Walker.
Three hundred and seventy-
five ballots were cast in the
special election, 179 fewer than
had been recorded in the Pre-
cinct 3 general election race
which ended in a dead heat on
November 8.
Powledge received 208 votes,
Walker 166. Each candidate had
received 277 votes in the gen-
eral election.
The original tally from the
November 8 election had show-
ed Walker winning by one vote,
278 to 277, but Powledge re-
quested and got a re-count and
the result was a tie vote.
A new election was ordered.
Voters in Voting Precincts 3, 5
and 7 were eligible to vote in the
Commissioners Precinct 3 elec-
tion.
Powledge scored a solid vote
in his home precinct, Precinct 3
LEONARD F. POWLEDGE
at Allison, with 83 votes to only
three for his opponent. Pow-
ledge also carried the Precinct 7
(Gem) box 25 to 20.
Walker won in the Precinct 5
box (Baker School, in Canadian)
106 to 70, and led in the
absentee voting, 37 to 30.
In the initial balloting on
November 8, Walker had car-
ried the Precinct 5 box 172 to
123, and led in the heavy
absentee voting 77 to 38, al-
though the totals for those two
boxes were altered by errors
found in the recount.
Powledge led on November 8
in his home precinct (Allison) 85
to 6, and at Gem (Precinct 7) 31
to 23.
The special election victory
gives Powledge his third four-
year term on the County Com-
missioners Court.
