The shape of things to come
By Alice Gilroy in the Floyd County Hesperian Beacon
^^■HAT A RELIEF! I for one am happy Barbie’s
■ ■ shape is changing.
My shape has been in a continuous state of change
since I was born and I see no reason why the woman
with the “perfect body” should not have to finally face
the music!
The fact that she has looked this way for 38 years
does bother me, but it makes me feel better knowing
she is going to have to have plastic surgery to look
“more contemporary”.
All those women who couldn’t take it anymore and
got their plastic surgery so they could look like Bar-
bie are probably a little depressed. What are they
going to do now that Barbie has decided the looks
those same women used to have is the look Barbie
now wants.
Life is so fickle!! It’s just not fair!
I do find some consolation in knowing that none
of her clothes are going to fit now. Why should they?
I have to continually change my clothes because
of the hot dryer shrinking them — w'hy shouldn’t she
have those kinds of problems!
She has been able to wear the same size since her
last plastic surgery in 1977. Now I ask you — is that
fair? This shape change isn’t going to bother her at
all. Someone else will shop for all her clothes and pay
for them too! She isn’t going to have to shop in garage
sales to afford the clothes that will keep up with her
changing body.
I personally think they need several kinds of Bar-
bies. They could start out with a teenager’s body,
then a young woman, then a pregnant woman, then
a w'oman who has given birth to a couple of kids and
has no time or money for work-outs in gyms, and then
ending with a grandma Barbie.
Put them all in a row and then stand perfect Ken
up in front of them. I wonder which one he’ll run to?
Duh!!
After all the years she has given him!!
The real C&W
A guest commentary by Les Brown
■loT EVERYTHING BAD that happens can be
IIblamed on the El Nino or the Internet. Some
bad stuff is the direct result of program directors who
choose play lists for almost every Country & Western
radio station in America.
This “Truth” recently came to me in a vision while
driving dowm a highway somewhere in Arizona. I
turned on the car radio and hit the scan button and
up came Garth Brooks. Kept scanning and this time
got Travis Tritt. Again I pushed and Billy Ray Cyrus
blared away.
These “triple-h” entertainers (hunks, hats, and
hard bodies) just aren’t my type C&W singer al-
though they dominate radio play on most stations.
Whatever happened to “real” artists from two-step,
shuffle board, and neon light land, people like George
and Tammy, Merle Haggard, and yes, Bob Wills and
the Texas Playboys?
If these long-haired, earring wearing, cocaine
snorting, backward gimme cap wearing, mineral
water drinking, and nose-pierced program directors
know C&W history dating back to before the Clinton
Administration, it’s news to me.
So—for those program directors who subscribe to
the Canadian Record, here’s ten top song titles, sans
artists names, to insert on your C&W play lists:
“She’d Rather Be Homeless Than Be Home With
Me.”
“I Never Said I Loved You When The Lights
Were On.”
“If You Keep Checkin’ In On Me, I’m Checking
Out On You.”
“This Is A Stick Up...Give Me All Your Love.”
“She’s Just A Name Dropper And Now She’s
Dropping Mine.”
“How Can I Miss You If You Won’t Go Away?”
“If You Don’t Leave Me Alone, 111 Go Find Some-
one Who Will.”
“It Takes Me All Night Long To Do What I Used
To Do All Night Long.”
"My W’ife Ran Away With My Best Friend And I
Sure Miss Him.”
"I’m So Miserable Without You, It’s Like Having
You Here.”
Now, with that out of the way, I feel a lot better.
