problem to me, however. I don’t seem to have too much of
it. That’s not a complaint... and I don’t think of my job as
a hardship. I enjoy newspaper work. It has infinite
variety. I am a sports fan, if not an active participant at
least an involved by-stander, and my job lets me enjoy a
lot of different sports in their season without feeling that
I’m playing hooky from more serious duties. It’s not all fun
and games ... hut a lot of it is fun!

To the editor:
We had a family reunion at
Lake Marvin recently. We want
to thank Chuck, Freda and
Brandon Robinson for the ex-
cellent care and clean facilities
at the lake. Also the Chamber
of Commerce of Canadian for
all the work they have done on
the lake and facilities. It’s a
great place for reunions and
camping out since it’s been
cleaned up and looking great!
There are 3 cabins now
available for use. Tho there
wasn’t any electricity (no
problems, we used lanterns)
we had every other comfort of
home. The only thing missing
was hook-ups for R.Vs for the
older folk.
But, hey, Canadian, work on
it. You’ve got something to be
proud of.
Sincerely,
Gene & Bobbie Purcell

To the Editor
Have been meaning to write
and tell you how much I en-
joyed the time I spent in your
town.
I worked and stayed in
Canadian for several weeks
while reviewing the County
ASCS office. My job takes me
to several Texas cities.
Russ Jones and his office
staff were so helpful and
cooperative. I would like to say
your town should be proud to
have him and his wife, Benet-
ta, who works in one of your
banks, as a young couple in
your town.
Billie and Don (Stuckey) at
the Canadian Motel did much
to make my home away from
home enjoyable.
One of the pleasures was
walking in your walking parks
and the High School track.
Your newspaper was very
informative and I enjoyed
every issue. Other places that
were nice were Lad’s Phar-
macy, the Cleaners, the Palace
Theatre (that showed the
latest), the Courthouse base-
ment on the tornado alert
where I was happy to go when
Edith Ward called and told me
to take cover!!!
A bouquet of roses to the
Craft Shop (Hobby Shop)
where I bought bunnies, etc.
for grandchildren, and others
who did special favors.
Wanted all to know that
your town and the people who
make up a town are and will
remain special to me.

Is Radon an EPA invention
From The Perryton Herald
HThE ENVIRONMENTAL Protection Agen-
4L cy seems to be obsessed with the idea of
finding new dangers to our health, sometimes
finding dangers where none exists.
The EPA has been warning about the danger
we face from radon in our homes. This odorless,
colorless gas is said to be emitted from the
ground under and around our homes. When we
breathe this gas over a period of time, we can get
lung cancer.
The remedy is to install expensive detection
devices in the home and equip the home with
gadgets that take radon out of the air.
The EPS has said that an estimated 26 per-
cent of all American homes are exposed to radon
and that we Americans are at risk until we do
something about it.
Radon is a newcomer on the scene of health
hazards. Most of us never heard of it until the
EPA began issuing warnings.
In the past couple of years there have been
several studies done by private research or-
ganizations and they come up with findings quite
different from the EPA.
One study, made by the Indoor Environment
Program at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory at
the University of California, says that instead of
26 percent of American homes being invaded by
radon gas, the actual figure is less than 1 percent.
After measuring the radon content in more
than 60,000 houses, the figure comes up to less
than 2 percent where radon gas was found.
In New Jersey, where the EPA first dis-
covered radon, less than 1 percent of the homes
have any.
The highest incident of radon gas in houses
was found in North Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota.
Curiously enough, these three states have the
lowest incidence of lung cancer in the United
States.
There is no evidence at all that exposure to
radon gas is killing people. One scientist has said
that radon gas is something that is emitted by
nature itself through interaction of soil, water,
air and organic matter. He said the incidence of
radon in the air may be higher in a dense forest
out west than in anybody’s house.
And these scientists conclude that if there is
a smoker in the house, its occupants are at more
risk from his tobacco smoke than from any radon
gas that may be present.
Score another strikeout for the EPA. But let’s
not be too hard on them. After all, a bureaucrat
has to stir up something to keep a job.
The four wheel coach was developed in Germany during
the Middle Ages.
The early Egyptians' eye shadow concocted of kohl, a
lead ore, was first designed to shield eyes from the sun.
