Ignorance a good excuse
PERSONALS
Juanita Myers is a patient at

fered in a fall late last week.

formerly of Pampa, spent the

¥ GNORANCE should be the only excuse for not
1 voting in the November 8 General Election.
Texas Election Laws make it easy for qualified
voters to cast a ballot in this election. If for any
reason you cannot get to the polls on that election
day...even if your only reason is that you want to
do something else at that particular time...nothing
in the law prohibits you from casting an absentee
ballot during the three week period prior to
election day provided for that purpose.
“Any qualified voter is eligible to vote absentee
by personal appearance,” the Election Code now
provides. Period. You don't have to certify
excuses. Those restrictions have been removed
from the code. If you are otherwise qualified to
vote, you can go to the office of the County Clerk
and ask for and get a ballot at any time prior to the
Friday, November 4, deadline for absentee voting.
You don't even have to get out of bed on election
day if you don’t want to.
But ignorance should be a valid reason for not
voting. If you are not sufficiently informed about
the candidates and the issues involved, and are not
sufficiently motivated to make the effort to become
informed, you might do your fellow citizens a big
favor by not voting.
Elections are important. This is the way we
govern ourselves in this democracy, and intelligent
choices at the polls by informed citizens are vital to
the process.
But we have ceased to join in the “get out the
vote at all costs” movement. We think it is bad
when fewer than half of our citizens take part in
our elections, because our democracy is based on
the principle of majority rule, but not as bad as it
could be if a majority of those voting are
uninformed.
So we have concluded that ignorance is a good
excuse for not voting in our elections. If you vote,
then vote only for those candidates or those issues
about which you hold informed opinions...leaving
those you’re not sure about, or those you know
nothing about, unchecked on your ballot.
Every citizen should be informed, and every
citizen is entitled to a vote, but if you don’t know
and don’t care, it’s better that you don’t muddy the
waters for those who do. Ignorance, in these cases,
is a good excuse for not voting.
Start a hot rumor
ROPHETS OF GLOOM are always with us and
ML there’s not much we can do about them
beyond ignoring them and refusing to spread their
tales of woe. Two Canadian businesses have
recently joined in a public announcement to assure
their customers that they are not closing their
doors and expect to continue in business here for
many years to come.
Now the rumor-mongers have shifted their
attention to another long-standing Canadian
business, with as little basis in truth, and
undoubtedly there will be others to follow.
If reports like this disturb you. and you can't just
ignore them, then go to the owner of the business
involved and put the question directly...but don't
repeat the rumors and add to their spreading.
The economy has been down...there's no doubt
about that; and it is recovering...all indicators are
positive. We've been through a boom cycle, and
we’ve been through a down turn, and we've
bottomed out and we are coming back. These
swings in the economy have happened before and
will happen again. But Canadian is not going to
fold up, and neither is the nation.
Want to start a hot rumor? Tell everybody that
the newspaper is going to fold. It's not, but some
folks will enjoy believing it and you can help
spread a little good cheer and give the rumor-morr-
gers a target that can take the heat.
Check up on us every Thursday. We ll see you
next week.
