would knock out the American strength in the Pacific for all time...a
grave miscalculation.
Instead the Japanese attack which destroyed a major part of the
U.S. Fleet united us as nothing before had ever done, and changed
our lives for all time...but for a generation of Americans then
un-born, the date has no more significance than a score of others in
the history books, and the “infamy” of it is lost in time. Sic transit
gloria. That is as it should be, perhaps...we must not live in the past,
but we should never forget to learn from it.
It is important for our younger generation to know the meaning of
“Pearl Harbor Day”...not as a “day of infamy” but as a turning point
in the modem history of our nation which got us where we are today,
for better or worse. If they understand how and why we got here,
maybe they’ll be able to translate that into “better” for the future.

BONDING
>«■ What is "bonding” all about?
a Tooth bonding is a process which involves filling
tooth chips or spaces to improve the overall
appearances of your teeth. This relatively new method
of cosmetic dentistry has improved countless smiles.
Bonding consists of "painting” three layers of
chemical materials onto the teeth: first, buffered acid
to leave the surface porous; then, an acrylic liquid
which penetrates the tooth enamel and binds to it;
and finally, a tooth-colored filling material to be
sculpted over the problem spots. Each layer is
hardened with a special light.
The major advantages of bonding are: ‘Shortened
treatment time, usually one or two visits ‘Painless
procedure, no drilling or anesthesia ‘Less expensive
than capping

Warning for shoppers
A STROLL THROUGH the Yellow Pages can be
4 »treacherous if you’re doing your Christmas
shopping by telephone and depending on getting
those gifts in time for Christmas.
Attorney General Jim Mattox says there are
certain federal laws which protect you as a mail
order shopper, but the telephone shopper has no
such protection.
The so-called “Mail Order Rule" which requires
the company to ship your items within the
advertised time period does not apply to telephone
orders, Mattox says. So you could order a
Christmas gift but receive it in February and still
owe the company for the order.
If you actually order bv mail, the company must
ship your order within the promised time period (or
in 30 days if no time is stated). If the seller fails to
ship on time, it is required to notify you of a delay
and give you the option of cancelling the order.
The Federal Trade Commission, which enforces
the “Mail Order Rule”, advises that 800 numbers
can be used for questions about delivery, refund
policy, etc., even if you do order by
mail.
If you order by phone, the Attorney General
warns, you should make a note of the date, the
name, address and phone number of the company,
and a detailed description of your order. If you
order by mail, it is wise to keep a copy of your
letter or order form, as well as a copy of any
advertisement that prompted you to make the
order.
If the merchandise you receive is substantially
different from what you ordered, you have a right
to cancel your contract. You should write the
company as soon as possible after receiving the
merchandise, stating that you wish to cancel. II
you have any doubts about the company's
reliability or honesty, you should consider keeping
the merchandise as evidence until you receive your
refund. Then if you do get your money back, you \
can return the goods, the Attorney General
advises.
“If you are unable to get the company to give
you a refund,” Mattox says, “Our Consumer
Protection Division mav be able to help you
through its mediation service. However, it's a lot
easier to avoid the problem by shopping only with
reputable companies."
If you receive something in the mail that you
didn’t order, consider it a gift, the Attornev
General advises. Some unscrupulous sellers will
send items along w ith a phoney "invoice” hoping
the person receiv ing it will be fooled into thinking 8
he must pay for the item. The general rule is, if you
didn t order it you don't have to pay for it...or
return it either, for that matter.
Of course you can avoid all of these problems by
doing your C hristmas shopping with the home-
town merchants you know and can trust. With
them you can see the merchandise you’re buying,
and not have to worry about some telephone
answering device messing up your order.
