VETERANS' WEEK
OBSERVANCES
A round of activities are plan-
ned by local VFW members
marking Veteran’s Week
Bellaire Mayor Harry Reed
has proclaimed Jan. 20-27 Veter-
an’s week in Bellaire. Similar
proclamations are being made
’ in other municipalities through-
out the nation.
To launch the week locally,
special services will be conduct-j
ed at St. Thomas Episcopal
Church Sunday by the Rev T.
Robert Ingram, post chaplain
All veterans are invited to at-
tend.
Frank Burns VFW Rost 5619
will install new members at a
meeting at 8 pm on Jam 23
at the post home, 5710 Jessa-
mine.
From 2 to 7 pm. on Jan 2e
the post will hold open house.
And on Jan. 2" the local post
will be host for the Fourth Dis-
trict meeting. Memorial services
are scheduled for *1 a.m. at the
Community Building. Following
luncheon the auxiliary will meet
at the post home and the VFWs
at the Community Building.
Several officers from the de-
partment are expected to attend.

PLAY HOSTS TO
KEY OFFICIALS
The Bellaire Lions Club play-
ed host to a number of key offi-
cials of the organization at a
luncheon meeting on Jan. 8 at
Foote’s Cafeteria.
The distinguished guests in-
. eluded Joe Childers. Interna-
tional Directors from Texas and
Dr. W. M. Jones, district gover-
nor of the 78 clubs in the Hous-
ton area.
Also present were three dep-
uty district governors, Hubert
Clark of Galveston, C. L. Hillin
of the North Side Club and Nor-
man Gauerke of the Bellaire
Club._

Slate Luncheon
And Style Show
The Houston Chapter of the
National Council of Catholic
Women will sponsor its annual
book review, luncheon and style
show at 10 a.m. on Jan. 23.
The Rev. Edward Sullivan
CSB, distinguished University of
St. Thomas professor will re-
view, "Fantasy And The Devil
On Three Planets,” by C. S.
Lewis.
The review is being presented
by the library and literature
committee of the Houston Dis-
trict Council.
The style show will feature
students from Marian High and
Mount Carmel Home Economics
classes.
Tickets may be obtained from
all Catholic parish Altar So-
cieties, Mother’s Clubs, PTA
Presidents or a the door.
Arrangements are being hand-
led by Mrs. Leonard J. French,
president; Mrs. J. K. McCarthy,
vice-president, and Mrs. Joseph
P. Lyons, chairman of the li-
brary and literature committee.
Proceeds of the affair will go
toward distributing Catholic
books, magazines and pamphlets
to Rice Institute, the University
of Houston, the University of St.
Thomas, Sacred Heart Domini-
can College and all city hos-
pitals.
SILVER TEA
The Grandmother’s Club will
hold a Siver Tea from 2 to 4
p.m. today at the home of Mrs.
H. A. Johns, 105 Cherrywood.
Sell through the Texan classi-
fieds.
At the meeting Bellaire Lions
rallied behind the current March ,
of Dimes in a big way, contri-
buting more than $355 to the
fund.
Builder Krist Hubert led the
parade with a check for $100.
Plans were also discussed for
the area-wide telethon to be
conducted by local television sta-
tions Jan. 19 and 20 in support
of the March of Dimes campaign.
It was also the kick-off for
the club’s January membership
drive.
San Antonia Minister
Is UF Meeting Speaker
The Rev. Robert S. Tate, Jr.,
of San Antonio, president of
Texas Social Welfare Associa-
tion, will be the principal speak-
er at the annual meeting of
the United Fund and Community
Council on January 23, Mrs.
George A. Hill, Jr., meeting
chairman, has announced.
A leader in religious and so-
cial welfare programs through-
out Texas, Rev. Tate is pastor
of the Alamo Heights Methodist
Church in,San Antonio. He was
reelected to his third term as
TSWA president last November.
He is president of the board
of directors of the YMCA in bis
home city, and is chairman of
the San Antonio Council of
Churches Social Welfare Com-
mission,
