The Sharpstown Story
By Ann, Heck
GY 4-5673
The last year has witnessed land west of the Sharpstown
and I committed our annual er- for a celebration requiring the i Dave Aldrich, active member
many significant changes in
Sharpstown, and the next 12
months will bring even more
sweeping progress in every
pase of Sharpstown’s “way of
life for the whole family,” De-
veloper Frank W. Sharp has
announced.
A few Sharpstown highlights
of the last year include:
1. Start of construction for
to become one of America’s
Sharpstown Center, destined1
finest and most advanced
shopping facilities.
2. Rapid progress by the
State Highway Department in
construction of the $20,000,000
Southwest Freeway.
3. Start of a $26,000,000
homebuilding program, which
has already boosted Sliarps-
towm’s population over the
2000-family mark.
4. Start of a vigorous cam-
paign for the new Baptist uni-
versity to be located in
Sharpstown tract donated by
Mr. Sharp and his family; and
completion of the Sharpstown
Baptist Church’s imposing
structure on Bellaire Boul-
evard.
5. Stepped-up construction
and announcement of signifi-
cant locations of industry in
Sharpstown Industrial Park.
Since announcement of the
$12,000,000 Sharpstown Center
last December, construction
work has proceeded as fast as
weather permitted, with a big
step-up i nactivity during recent
weeks.
The Sharpstown Realty Com-
pany, headed by Mr. Sharp, is
the owner and builder of
Sharpstown Center. The center
is to be completed during the
summer of 1961, with opening
ceremonies scheduled for Aug-
ust 15, 1961.
So far, announcements have
been made that the following
firms will occupy major por-
tions of the 600,000 square feet
of space in the completely air-
conditioned center: Foleys,
Weingarten’s Bond’s, Montgom-
ery Ward, Kresge’s, Walgreens,
and Wyatt’s Cafeterias.
Air Conditioned Mall
Sharpstown Center will be the
first major shopping center in
this part of the country with
a completely - air - conditioned
mall, which will enable shoppers
to stroll from store to store with-
out exposture to the weather.
The State Highway Depart-
ment has awarded the contract
for full four-lane construction
of the Southwest Freeway from
Post Oak to Alief Road this
spring. Within the next three
months, the Highway Depart-
ment plans to place under con-
tract the full freeway construc-
tion of the section from down-
town Houston to Alief Road, and
to contract for paving of South-
west Freeway service roads
from Alief Road through
Sharpstown to U. S. Highway
59 near Sugar Land. Highway
Department engineers hope to
have the paving of these sec-
tions completed by the summer
of 1961.
One A Day
Families have been moving
into Sharpstown homes at the
average rate of one every day
for months, and the opening of
new sections for residential de-
velopment west of Fondren
Road is due to increase this
“move-in rate” substantially
within the next 12 months, Mr.
Sharp predicts.
A dozen of Houston’s leading
homebuilders are participating
ror of going out to supervise the
opening fully clothed, and as a
result felt left out and ill-used
as all our friends swam past,
cool and very smug. We consoled
ourselves with a lime sno-cone
and snatches of conversation
with John. He tells us there is
still time for feminine residents
of all ages to join the synchro-
nized swimming groups so if

George W. Strake, oilman and
leading Catholic layman, has
been named to head the con-
struction drive for these projects.
All of Sharpstown’s religious
groups have progressed notably
in their various church building
plans during the past year. Com-
pletion of the imposing red brick
structure of the Sharpstown
