Second \\ I o> no t ■■ <• c-t an reflection U|wm tin character or integrity of
any candidate running fm Criminal District Judge, Both contestants are, we are sure,
mi
m of hieh integrity and honesty
Third But our Ci minal District Judge -di uld he well versed in the criminal laws of
hi - State i hie m eat cans* for complaint of adequate law enforcement is the fact that
mam of our trial judges do not know the criminal laws nor how to apply our laws of
procedure. From the very nature and van *t\ of crime, criminal law is very complex,
complicated and technical, and will always !H> so. If present technicalities should be
removed othets would be speedily created, because of the many phases, shades and
degrei of crime. \ ease that require day s and days of valuable time to be tried and
that cost- the State -event! thousands of dollars of expenses can be reversed on an
error of the trial judge if he does not know the mimssary law The State of Texas
annually loses hundred- of thousands of doll urs because of the ignorance of trial judges.
Although w. nav one of tin hardest districts in the State for a trial judge to fill, be-
cause of our situation on the border and on r m \ed population, our district has not lost
a dollar since Judge Timon has been on the bench. His decisions are not reversed.
He is one of the best trial judges in the State. By reason of his accurate knowledge of
the law he -ave> the State many times his salary every year, as compared to other dis-
tricts in tin* State Punishment for crime i s, therefore, not delat ed in this district. For
the sake of ecotn my and efficiency he should be retained on the bench. From a strictly
selfish standpoint those of us who practice e riminal law could do better with him re-
moved and tunc om- !e» qualified m his place, because we could then get our clients
off easiei and -eew delays in trials. But Us good eitons, interested in helping the
public senna an • eonoiide and efficient administration, we are all going to vote for
Judge Timon.
Fourth -If vu’tiuc the farmer- in C ameron County should come and tell us a
certain famiei wa •> qua fi< 11 to manage a certain farm, we would believe it. If
virtually a I f tb< b ai-.ci n this county should come and tell us a certain banker was
not qualified to man urn a vrtain bank, w e would bcli-ve it. If virtually all of the
doctors in the co’ ay hould come and tell u s a certain doete was not qualified to
bandit a certain • ,.se, w» would believe it. \\V think we are as familiar with our pro-
fusion a an equal number of farm ers, or bankers, or doctors are with
tludrs, and w< do not Jud. e < mining ham is sufficiently qualified to serve as
( l imirnd lb. JmDa of this district; an d we think a man who has reached his years
i too old to h i tie ect -ary technical k imwleiige of law and procedure a Criminal
District Jmlct mould know to properly fill the place.
W<* the ref o i e, ask you to consider the foregoing Brief in an up-
baited rttitudc without reference to any political faction, as we
are doing, before you cast your ballot. I Attorneys running for
office were not asked to sign.)
