One Destroyer Sunk; One Damaged

Boll Weevil in Louisiana.
New Orleans: Prof. H. A. Mor-
gan. secretary of the Louisiana
Crop Pest Coniiiiis4on. made an
investigation of the Oakdale cotton
region and officially announces that
the boll weevil exists there. Oak-
dais is forty miles south of Alexan-
dria, on the Watkins Railroad, run-
ning into Lake Charles. Prof. Mor-

from Beaumont, Texas, having
made the entire trip by water on
the little stern-wheel steamer John
II. Kirby. The party left Beaumont
on July 30. They will remain in
the city a month or six weeks.
Large Irrigation Contract Completed
Austin: John W. Maxoey, the
well known Houston engineer, is
finishing one of the largest engi-
neering contracts ever let in Texas.
It is the 21-mile irrigation canal for
the G. Bedell Moore syndicate. Tho
total cost is $1,100,000, and 15.00,0
acres of land will be put under irri-
gation next season. About 4,000
acres were irrigated this season. Al-
falfa. sugar cane, cotton, corn and
fruits are grown.
