Ann Herman Chosen
Homecoming Queen
The I'alaeios High School stu-
dents elected Miss Ann Herman, a
senior, as the 1954 homecoming
queen with Miss Darlene Keszler,
a junior, and Miss Gail King, a
sophomore, as princesses. The
queen’s escort will be Fred I.aw.
The crowning, by Miss Sue Pen-
land, the 1955 homecoming queen,
will take place at half-time cere-
monies. The new queen will reign
the last half of the game and also
for the dance.
The first half of the game will
be dedicated to the 1949 team.
A dance in honor of the home-
coming queen will be held in the
High School gym following the
game. A special invitation is ex-
tended to all ex-seniors.
Surprise Dinner
The George Curtis’ residence was
the scene of a surprise birthday
dinner and party given in honor of
Mrs. Verle Curtis last Thursday
night, October 21st. As Mrs. Cur-
tis came in the door, all the guests
sgng “Happy Birthday” from the
dining room which was lighted only
by the birthday candle.
A buffet dinner was served and
birthday cake and ice cream was
enjoyed by all. Those celebrating
the happy occasion with the
honoree were: Mrs. Dorothy Lee
Curtis Pease and baby daughter,
Verle Antoinete, and Mrs. Antoi-
nette Pease, all of San Antonio;
George Curtis, Marvin and Bar-
bara Curtis, Mr. and Mrs. R. Q.
Mansell, Noel and Loraine Curtis,
Donna and Charles, all of Palacios,
and Mrs. Margaret Foss and
School Cafeteria

Miss Dolores Jewell Deadrick, a
former student of Palacios Junior
High School (colored), became the
bride of R. Benny Finlayson, Jr.
Sunday evening. He is the son of
Bishop R. Benny Finlayson of
Brooklyn N. Y.
The bride is the daughter of
Bishop and Mrs. D. Mitchell Dca-
driek of Cleveland, Tenn.
The ceremony was performed in
the Church of God of Prophecy.
Mrs. Dorothy Deadrick, pastor by
Bishop J. W. Deadrick of Eagle
Lake.
Bishop D. Mitchell Deadrick gave
his daughter in marriage. She was
dressed in a gown of French bro-
caded satin. It featured a fitted
bodice with a portrait neckline the
border of which was embroidered
with bridal pearls. The skirt ex-
tended into a formal train of bro-
caded satin and appliaued tulle.
The bride wore a contour pearl-
trimmed crown with a fingertip
veil of illusion. A cloche of pearls
and sequins held the fingertip veil.
She carried a white mum and
stephanotis bouquet.
Mrs. Dora Lewis served the
bride as matron of honor. She wore
a bouffant tulle skirt overlaid with
ruffles of blue tulle and silk, fea-
turing a draped bodice She car-
ried pink gladiolas.
Similarly attired were the brides-
maids, Miss Carol Hayes of Hous-
ton, Miss Novella Lightener of
West Columbia, Miss Deforest
Carter of Palacios and Mrs. Bobbie
Jean Carter Middleton of Houston.
Best man was Robert D. Middle-
ton and ushers included Clyde
F. H. A. MEETING
The Palacios Chapter Future
Farmers of America met Tuesday
night in their regular monthly
meeting.
Members of the chapter voted
to attend the San Antonio Live-
stock Exposition in February.
Mike Seaquist will be Palacios
F.F.A. representative in the Hous-
ton Fat Stock Show annual “Dairy
Calf Scramble.” Robert Slaughter
will represent the chapter in the
“Beef Calf Scramble.”
Eleven boys in the local F.F.A.
Chapter will show calves in the
county show at Bay City. They are
Harold Bowers and Joe Johs show-
ing Angus calves; Norbert Egge-
meyer and Raymond Michalik,
showing Hereford calves; Mason
Holsworth, Joe Tanner, Pat Nel-
son, Kieth Thompson and Laverne
Brune showing crossbred calves.
Ten boys will show swine in the
county show. They are Alfred
Manning, Clifford Dewitt, Lonnie
Beard, Clyde Ware, John Beard,
Bill Dewitt, Harold Bowers, Charlie
Cepak, Guy Chamblee, and Billy
Stuhrenberg.

Roy Jr. and L. G. Hayts.
The candle bearers were Dianne
Lewis and Paige Nelson assisted
by the flower girls, Jennifer Brown,
Cassie Larry, Barbara Davis and
Melody Nelson dressed in blue
and pink tulle gowns. Floor
ushers were Lionel Deadrick and
Eugene Deadrick.
The reception was at 611f8th St.
the home of th<‘ bride’s grand par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Shannon,
assisted hy Miss Winnie Shannon
and served by local school teacher,
Mrs. Carita Sanford.
The newlyweds will be at home in
Brooklyn N. Y. after the season’s
holidays.

Glen Weimer were in Victoria
Wednesday attending District Con-
ference of the Methodist Church.
Miss Besse Foley of Renwick,
Iowa, formerly of Palacios, is
spending two weeks here with Mrs.
Ray Foley and the Ruel B. Foleys.
In the early days of Palacios she
spent most of her time setting type
under the supervision of Editor
Stump, who owned the Beacon at
that time.
