Robert Robertson
Named To Council
Of Presbyterian Group
AUSTIN—Robert Robertson of
Palacios has been named to the
council for Westminister Student
Fellowship, Presbyterian student
group at the University of Texas.
Robertson, a junior majoring in
architectural engineering, is a
member of the Tejas Club, men’s
social club; and Phi Eta Sigma,
scholastic honorary to which he
was elected on the basis of his
freshman grades. He is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. John H. Robertson.
Garden Study Club
The Tres-Palaeios Garden Study
club will meet with Mrs. Mabel
Petersen Tuesday, May 25, at 3
p.m. Members are urged to be pre-
sent and visitors are welcome. Mrs.
Jessie Salsbury, secretary.

Elected To Phi Kappa
Phi At Louisiana State
Mrs. Marvin Curtis of Palacios
was honored at Louisiana State
University May 12 by election to
Phi Kappa Phi, national honor
society. •
The local student was among 84
outstanding L.S.U. students and
faculty members who wei e initiated
into the society and honored at a
banquet.
The society encourages scholar-
ship in any line of study by elect-
ing students from the upper tenth
of the junior class, graduate stu-
dents, and faculty members. Elec-
tion is considered generally as be-
ing as high an academic honor as
can come to a student.
Speaker for the occasion was Dr.
Joan C. Miller, Professor of Eng-
lish at L.S.U. Her subject was
“Education as a Private Enter-
prise.” Miss Marelena White, in-
structor in mathematics and presi-
dent of the society, presided over
the initiation ceremony.
Mrs. Martha Brown is in Marlin
visiting Rev. and Mrs. Lloyd Chap-
man and family.

Joanna Hendricks To
Enter Sam Houston
State Teachers College
Joanna Hendricks of Palacios,
one of 54 graduating sophomores at
Wharton County Junior College,
will enter Sam Houston State Col-
lege following graduation, accord-
ing to a survey of the class.
Forty-eight of those candidates
for graduation plan to enter a
senior college in the fall. Thirteen
plan to enter the University of
Texas, 13 will attend Sam Hous-
ton State, five will go to South-
west Texas Teachers College and
three will attend Stephen F. Aus
tin College.
WAYSIDE CLUB
The Wayside Club met April 28
at the home of Mrs. C- B. Viets
with twelve members and two visi-
tors present. Roll call was answered
by naming the Handiest Household
Gadget.
Mrs. Florip gave the program,
her topic being “Industrial Life in
Texas”. She also gave a report of
the County Federation Meeting held
in Bay City.
The hostess assisted by Mrs.
Tanner served very delicious re-
freshments.
The May meeting will be with
be with Mrs. Karl Wickham on
May 26.
Mrs. E. L. Hardy is enjoying a
two week vacation in Buffalo,
Minnesota.

Future Homemakers
Mother-Daughter
Banquet Held May 13
The Future Homemakers of
America held a banquet honoring
their mothers in the Junior High
School Cafeteria Thursday evening,
May 13, at 7:30.
The program included the open-
ing ceremony of the F.H.A. Chap-
ter, followed by the singing of the
F.H.A. Prayer Song by Misses
Laura Jo Swenson and Gail King.
Next was the installation services,
closed by the song of the Future
Homemakers.
Miss Laura Jo Swenson gave the
F.H.A. Highlights for 1953-54. At
this time the Chapter beau, Joe
Ray Beard, presented the F.H.A.
Girl of the Year, Patsy Wessel-
man, with a gift. Laura Jo Swenson
was presented an award from
Muriel’s by Colonel Harris for
having the best garment in H.E.
Miss La Nell Smith, out-going
President, was presented with a
gift for her work during the year.
The F.H.A. girls presented the
Chapter-mothers, Mrs. George Mor-
gan and Mrs. Charlie Johnson, with
gifts of appreciation. Mrs. J. G.
Smith, Chapter sponsor, was pre-
sented with a gift from the F.H.A.
girls. Rev. Rayford Harris then
gave the invocation.
Dinner was served by the F.F.A.
boys, Wallace Phillips, Jake Foltyn,
Fred Law, Jerry Thompson, Court-
land Frankson, Mason Holsworth
II, Phillip Shearer, Tommy Reneau,
Carroll Harvey, George Cornet,
Gaylon Harvey, and Dean Black-
well,
The menu was chicken and
spaghetti, green beans, new pota-
toes, slaw, jello-fruit cocktail, hot
rolls, tea, and coffee.
After dinner, Gail King, Dorothy
Smith, La Verne Smith, and Mary
Jean Roach sang “Oh, Baby Mine.”
Next was the closing ceremony
followed by the benediction by Rev.
Harris.
This banquet was made possible
because of the success of the F.I1.A.
Hobo Day, May 8.
There are 128 cubic feet in a cord
of wood.
We are indebted to Christianity
for gentleness, especially toward

Turtle Bay Home
Demonstration Club
The Turtle Bay Home Demon-
stration club met May 14 at the
home of Mrs. Myrl Miller with
eight members present.
Mrs. Neeley gave a demonstra-
tion on how to cook a meal in one.
Everyone enjoyed sampling the
dish, which was very good. Mrs.
John Beard had recreation and
Mrs. Alley won the prize.
The next meeting will be at the
home of Mrs. Henry Alley on May
28 at which time the Turtle Bay
club will entertain the Palacios
club with a 10 o’clock coffee.
Mrs. Miller served cokes, cookies
and ice cream,
