March 21, a series of jet fighter
squadrons will be stationed on the
islard to practice gunnery and
bombing on the base range. Air-
craft presently fly from Bergstrom
AFB at Austin, Foster AFB at
Victoria, and other bases to prac-
tice on the range.
Only access to the island in-
stallation is by boat or plane.
Carlton Crawford, president of
Texas Mid-Coast Water Develop-
ment Association, told the meet-
ing that a U.S. Corps of Engineers
brief on the proposed deep-water
pass will reach the division engi-
neer at Dallas this week for a
recommendation to Washington.
He said the association would
appreciate any cooperation re-
ceived from the Air Force on the
project.
In other business, John Winters,
C. of C. manager, told the group
that a petrochemical company has
made inquiries about availability
of land in Calhoun County for lo-
cation of a plant to employ from
150 to 200 persons. Winters said
'options on the land desired have
been found and are available if
the company decides to locate here.

Miss Yvonne Smith has been
elected into membership in Phi
Theta Kappa at the Wharton
County Junior College. Member-
ship in Phi Theta Kappa is the
highest honor that can come to a
junior college student. New mem-
bers are chosen by a faculty com-
mittee on the basis of their grades
and other qualifications such as
leadership and good chracter.

R. C. ‘Sharkey” Shelton who is
manager of our club’s summer
recreation program for school chil-
dren presented basic plans to the
club for his summer program.
Other plans and' ideas will be
worked out at subsequent meetings.
Present plans are to take all
children of school age for the three
summer months. Supervised games
including softball, volleyball, shuf-
fleboard, ping pong and others
will be conducted. At present, Mr.
Shelton advises, he already has
enough for 12 softball teams. Dur-
ing inclement weather there will
be movies, and reading and story
telling for the younger children.
Money recently raised by the
Harmonie Club's dance and sweet-
heart contest and by the Lions
Club Cake Mix Sale now being con-
ducted at the various stores will
be used to finance this recreation
program. Other projects will be
conducted later to help finance this
program.
Stores currently selling Betty
Crocker Cake Mixes for this pro-
gram are Hamlin’s Food Market,
Cleo Hamlin’s Grocery, Lewis Mini-
max, Partain Food Market, Pala-
cios Grocery and Market and
Hunt’s Food Market. The club re-
ceives a percentage from Betty
Crocker for each package of mix
sold in any of these stores. The
customer may buy them at a
special saving.
Tuesday’s night meeting was at-
tended by 12 members and four
guests for percentage of 86 '/o be-
ing present.

of a term as City Recorder.

nearly as possible to conform to
the general laws of the State of
Texas, regulating general elections
when not in conflict with the pro-
visions of the statutes relating

election unless he be a qualified
voter under the constitution and

cios, Texas, by orders passed on the
7th and 21st days of February,
